There are several reasons why people have an affinity with nature. First, nature is the environment in which the human race evolved, and it contains the ecological niche for which we are adapted as hunting-gathering creatures. On some level we still perceive a biological connection to our past. Second, the alternative to the natural world is the artificial world, and while the human race has been brilliant at creating artificial environments in which to live, there is an investment of money and effort in creating such environments, while nature is, in a sense, free (although there will still be people trying to charge admission). Thirdly, nature does have an authentic beauty, that results from the elegant biological solutions that various species have evolved, and also from the scope and spontaneity of the natural world as compared to the artificial world. Nothing in your living room is likely to be as impressive as an arctic or antarctic glacier.
