Domestic violence is a social problem because effects so many more people than just the intended victim. Example lets say a wife is abused, she suffers, pyramid down the children observe mommy crying and daddy always screaming at her, and telling her she is stupid. Pyramid down children become scared, act out pyramid down become a problem for an abusive little person and he begins to abuse them as well pyramid out the mom/wife becomes so stressed and overwhelmed that now her friends, coworkers, parents, siblings are all worried about her, they can see she is being abused, but she is so scared, embarrassed and lost within herself to do anything about it. So yes it is a social problem that all people should be aware of.

What is Gils theory on social structure in child abuse?

Gil's theory was based on his research in the 1970's, that child abuse was related to social class and that psychological explanations of abuse on their own were too narrow based as it underestimated the stress from society through poverty etc. Gil's theory also mentions that the state is also to blame through policy making making such inequalities. hope this helps a little. Brian Corby is usually helpful for explaining the social structural theories.
