According to the Chicago Tribune, based on police department statistics, there were 3,700 murders during the 8 years of Mr. Obama's administration. That may seem like a lot, but in context, it is not. Over all, the crime rate has remained about the same: except for a spike in 2016, murders have been on the decline. That said, there were about 461 murders in Chicago annually while Mr. Obama was president. On the other hand, when George W. Bush was president, there were about 555 a year; and the total number per year under President Obama is nearly the same as it was in the last few years of Mr. Bush's presidency. You may have heard an assertion by Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign that murders in Chicago were way up during the Obama years; that claim was not accurate.
