Viruses are a category of pathogen that get inside cells and hijack them to make copies of themselves. Viruses are extremely difficult to combat since you have to kill the cell to kill the virus and if it is in every cell then you kill the person. A Retrovirus is responsible for HIV Aids and they cover a very broad spectrum of disorders including influenza, herpes, and chicken pox. They also play a potential role in the development of cervical cancer, Alzheimer's and Heart disease. Only smallpox virus has been eradicated from the world so estimating the number of fatalities is tantamount to measuring the totality of deaths resulting from such disorders - numbering many millions per year across the world.
