In the 2001 national census of the United Kingdom, 71.6 per cent of the national population identified as Christian. However, only 33 per cent identified as 'religious', leaving open the possiblity that many who identified as Christian did so for cultural reasons or because they believe a religious belief to be expected. On these figures, at least 28.4 per cent of the national population is not Christian.

The proportion of the English population that identifies as Christian has continued to fall. Recent surveys have indicated that the proportion of Christians is now below 50 per cent.
