The predominant language spoken in Paraguay is Guarani. It is the native language. Each province has its own variety of guarani, such that at times someone from the chaco can barely understand someone from the central part. Some say that Paraguay was never conquered because the majority still speak the indigenous language. There are still many small tribes with their distinct language, but the majority speak guarani and then Spanish. I am not in Uraguay, but centuries ago, the settlers wiped out 100% of the indigenous population. They only speak spanish and are generally pure blooded European in descent. It is the most European country in all Latin America.
In Guarani, "goodbye" is pronounced as "adiosu."
