A large majority of the American population is in cities, as evidenced by the much lower population in predominantly rural states such as Wyoming. This is true especially when looking at the number of people per square mile. You literally can't have as many people in rural environments, because you need lots of space for crops and animals, while in cities, people can live on top of each other in apartments and such.
