Possible reasons why employees resist change in an organisation and some of the strategies that can be used to overcome the resistance.

Surprise

Employers need to sell their ideas to the employees before implementing change. Surprise changes are usually not welcome. Sudden changes can create a sense of insecurity in the employees.

Lack of Skills

Some changes require that employees possess a new set of skills and hence without training, employees will not welcome the change.

Fear of Failure

Related to the lack of skills is the fear of failure. Some changes can present challenges which are very intimidating. Hence psychological counseling may be a necessity.

Lack of Trust

In an environment where there is lack of trust, employees are likely to believe that there will be sinister motive for the change. Furthermore, managers who do not trust their employees will not allow employees participation in the change process even when it is necessary.

Personality Clashes

There are unfortunate situations where some managers are disliked by employees. Unless the underlying hatred issues are first dealt with, such managers can never be effective agents of change.

Poor Timing

Poor timing of change can be as a result of external and internal events. For example, change may require that an employee be transferred to Another Country while his or her mother is critically ill.

Lack of Tact

Sometimes it is not the change process by itself that shapes the attitudes of employees but it will be the way the change message is conveyed. Sensitive handling of change issues is critical.

Threat to Job Status or Security

Employees' fears of loss of job security or status may be real or imaginary and hence the necessary support systems must be put in place.

Unexplained changes to the timeline

If the timeline of the change process that is spelt out at the beginning of the change process is continuously shifted without explanation, employees will lose confidence in the change process and they will not share management's vision.

What is a good song that represents this quote -You can keep trying the same thing over and over or you can change what you are doing until something works?

I don't know what genre you are looking for but here is a country song that I think would be a good example: Montgomery Gentry: Some People Change This song is about how some people can change if they choose to and can change by doing something different by taking a stand and saying not any more. For example in the song there is a young women who is an alcoholic and she wishes she could change so she is not her mother so "she throws that bottle down" here are the lyrics if you need them. His old man was a rebel yeller... Bad boy to the bone. He'd say: "Can't trust that other fella," He'd judge 'em by the tone of their skin. He was raised to think like his Dad... Narrow mind full of hate. On the road to no-where fast, Till the Grace of God got in the way. Then he saw the Light an' hit his knees an' cried an' said a prayer... Rose up a brand new man; left the old one right there. Here's to the strong; thanks to the brave. Don't give up hope... some people change. Against all odds, against the grain, Love finds a way... some people change. She was born with her mother's habit... You could say: "It's in her blood." She hates that she's gotta have it... As she fills her glass up. An she'd love to kill that bottle, But all she can think about, Is a, a better life, a second chance, An' everyone she's letting down. She throws that bottle down. Here's to the strong; thanks to the brave. Don't give up hope... some people change. Against all odds, against the grain, Love finds a way... some people change. Thank God for those who make it... Let them be the Light. (Let them be the light) (Some people change.) Here's to the strong; thanks to the brave. Don't give up hope... some people change. Against all odds, against the grain, Love finds a way... some people change. Some people change. Hope this helps!
