The definition of Ethnic Group is - a category of people who are distinct because of the cultural characteristics handed down from generation to generation (language, reigion or national identificatin). - Sociology - Brinkerhoff/White 1985

ANSWER: There is an anthropological term known as ethnocentricity which describes the repulsion or distaste or confusion one experiences when confronted with new and exotic cultures not easily understood. Whites in general are accused of suffering from one form or another of ethnocentricity by various other ethnic groups who seemed to be repulsed by or have a distaste for or are confused by their experiences with most white people. Too much focus and attention is placed on ethnic backrounds and race. To much reverence is paid to culture. Some confuse classic art froms around the world as culture, this is not culture but merely reflects the culture in which the art was created. Culture is learned nothing more, nothing less. If you grew up in the United States and moved to Africa and spent a decade in Africa then returned to the U.S. the culture here would probably seem a little strange as you have learned an entirely new culture in Africa. If we can learn culture we can unlearn it. We can learn new cultures and we can accept other cultures as long as those cultures don't exhibit anti-survival qualities. Cannibalism is a culture, it deserves no respect. Of course, in anthropological terms, I suppose that makes me ethnocentric.
