It is not possible to provide a definitive answer for several reasons. First, there is no accurate survey enumerating Americans with NPD. Second, people with NPD do not recognize that they have a problem (remember they think they are great, wonderful, always right and smarter that everyone else) and so would not answer accurately. It is known that NPD, although rare, is more common in male with estimates that 75% of people with NPD are male.

There is no exact percentage, but research suggests that narcissistic traits are prevalent in around 6-10% of the general population. It is important to note that Narcissism exists on a spectrum and not all individuals who exhibit narcissistic traits would be diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
