Yes, this is true. No matter how smart a child is if they are not motivated to do the work the work does not get done. Motivation is the key and children need to realize that all of life is not fun and there will be times that will require them to do tedious and boring things ( taxes for one). School, at times, can be boring and tedious but this is just part of learning. Learning can also be hard and if the child "gives up" a high IQ does nothing since they are not using what they have in school. As a teacher I find that child the most frustrating because I know they are smart and can learn. They choose not to. All children have the choice to learn or not and parents/teachers often forget this little fact.
