Traditionally Chinese families value male children more than female children. Male children are responsible for caring for their parents when their parents reach old age. Male children can also carry on the family name because children are traditionally given the family name of their fathers.

Several years ago it was made illegal to abort a pregnancy after learning the unborn child's gender.

For population control reasons, Chinese couples are allowed only one baby, so they all abort the girls because it's the boys who will stay with them when they are old and care for them- the girls will go away and get married.

The imbalance in gender ratio in China is mainly due to the cultural preference for boys, as they are seen as more valuable in terms of continuing the family line and providing financial support in older age. This has led to a higher incidence of sex-selective abortions and abandonment of female babies, resulting in more boys being born than girls in certain regions of China.
