There seem to be two factors involved, 1) People stay indoors when it is hot out, and are therefore less active, and 2) The exposure to 'cold' (instead of the heat / cold cycle that is normal) increases the production of "brown fat" in your body. (Brown fat "Brown adipose tissue" acts as insulation against heat loss, and is normally the first fat to go when you are exposed to heat).
