The unpopular trades of moneylending and tax-collecting were pressed upon the Jews; and eventually many Jews became bankers and diamond cutters, since they couldn't be farmers or tradespeople. For this reason, some anti-Semites claimed this meant they liked coins.

This was derived from the fact that Jews were more often in banking and money-lending positions (because of legal strictures in European countries that put them in that position). In reality, Jews are no more concerned about small coins than any other group of people.
