Because California was once a part of the Spanish controlled territory known now as Mexico until the American Union (USA) invaded and the northern territories of the Spanish controlled lands now known as California, Arizona, New Mexico Texas, Colorado etc. After winning the battles against the Spanish and Mexican armies, the U.S. union claimed ownership or territorial rights over the lands in the name of the US of A. The majority of the remaining Spanish or Mexican people living in those territories remained and they became apart of the growing population of the area.

California has a large Spanish-speaking population due to its historical ties to Spain and Mexico. Spanish explorers first settled in California in the 16th century, and Mexico ruled over the region for decades before it became a U.S. state.
