171 miles taking this route:

  1. Take U.S. 340 EAST to I-70 EAST to BALTIMORE and WASHINGTON at EXIT 10 in Maryland.
  2. Take I-70 EAST to I-270 SOUTH to WASHINGTON at EXIT 53 (next exit), then take I-270 SOUTH to I-270 SPUR TO I-495 (Capitol Beltway) WEST to WASHINGTON and Northern Virginia.
  3. Take I-270 SPUR to I-495 (Capitol Beltway) EAST, then take I-495 (Capitol Beltway) around Washington, D.C. to I-95 SOUTH to RICHMOND at EXIT 57A.
  4. Take I-95 SOUTH to Richmond.

NOTE: If you are going on a weekday, make sure you time your trip right so that you don't hit D.C. rush hour. I would say 4:30 is good if you want to make it BEFORE rush hour, and 9:00 is good if you want to go AFTER rush hour.
