The largest residential palace in the world is the Istana Nurul Iman of Brunei, with an area of about 200,000 square meters.

The largest palace in the world is the "Pelople's palace", now the Parliament Palace in Bucharest, Romania. The building is 12 stories tall and just over 330,000 square meters.

It was built in 1980's by the comunist leader Ceausescu as a part of an urban project larger in surface than Venice. Ment to be Ceausescu' palace (residence and workplace) it houses now the Romanian Parliament (2 Cambers), a Contemporary Art Museum, a Conference Center (20 rooms between 500 and 2210sqm and some smaller ones) and more than 20 other public institutions. Despite this, the whole place is not yet in use. Many underground levels (from 12 to 90 meters underground) planned as atomic shelters and other services (swiming pools, emergency residences and prisons) are now deserted.
