Does caffeine help releave sciatica pain?

If by "releave" you mean "relieve"...yes, it did for me, big time! Five years ago I was suffering a recurrence of sciatica, this time in my right leg; it had been going on for 3 weeks or so. I had a long lunch with an old friend in a restaurant that had truly excellent coffee, so I had 3 cups & ordered a 4th. At that point my bladder asked for relief, and as I walked to the WC I was astounded that there was no pain in my leg! Zero!

I remained pain-free the rest of that day, then just before bed I had a twinge or two; and the next morning the pain was back. Trying to think of what was different, all I could come up with was having coffee with real caffeine (I had "decaffeinated" myself a few years before, following the conventional wisdom that caffeine is bad for you). When the truth finally became clear, I rushed out and bought some good freshly-ground coffee and prepared it...I drank a cup or two that very evening, and continued drinking it the next day. Within 2 days the sciatica torment was gone again. I continue to drink 'real' coffee, and have not had a recurrence.

I have mentioned this to 3 different doctors, all of whom admitted that little is actually known about caffeine, outside of the fact that it has a pretty powerful effect on the central nervous system.

Hope this helps others! There are no silver bullets for sciatica pain, but in my case it was magical...and if it helped me it might help you too. Worth a try. Make sure the coffee is good & strong, at least a half-cup of ground coffee to an eight-cup pot.

And, seeing as how there is no such word as "releave," I hope you'll use your built-in spellcheck to proof your category questions from now on! ;o)
