Im guessing you're asking how science and art apply to cosmetology.
In the form of art you have to look at people as a canvas and recognize that the work you are doing on that person is art either in the form of makeup or a haircut.

Is it mostly women working in the field of cosmetology?
In Europe, It's common to have a male cutting hair, A little more common than females, In the united states and canada, there's more females than males. It's bests of both worlds, Be a hairdresser in a salon, or be a barber. Plus if you're considered a cute male, Female clients will want to be your client, And if you're good at what you do, they will want you even more. But regardless If you're good at it, it doesn't matter if it's for males or females.. Barbers have existed since biblical times, and females didn't have man rights or jobs etc. It's 50/50.. Doesn't matter. A male Barber is 100% common, A male Salon hairstylist makes up maybe 40% of the career (my bad estimate)

I have been in the Cosmetology field for over 25 years, and have worked all around the world. There are no international cosmetology licenses. Each country has it's own specific requirement concerning the field of cosmetology, and when we look at just the US alone, there is not even a national License. Each state has it's own different criteria that has to be met for a license. Then there are countries like where I am now that have no license for Cosmetologist.
My best suggestion is to figure out where you want to work in the industry, and contact that area's governing entity for Cosmetologist and see what the requirements are..
What do you call a cosmetologist?
Yes, all States require barbers, cosmetologists, and other personal appearance workers to be licensed, with the exceptions of shampooers and makeup artists. Qualifications for a license vary by State, but generally a person must have a high school diploma or GED, be at least 16 years old, and have graduated from a State-licensed barber or cosmetology school. After graduating from a State approved training program, students take a State licensing examination. The exam consists of a written test and, in some cases, a practical test of styling skills or an oral examination. In many States, cosmetology training may be credited toward a barbering license, and vice versa, and a few States combine the two licenses. Most States require separate licensing examinations for manicurists, pedicurists, and skin care specialists.

How do you know if cosmetology is right for you?
One thing you can do is shadow someone who is already doing what you think you might want to do. Typically, individuals are very open about their careers. If you have someone you go to, ask her/him if you can stay with them for a day or two so you can find out the daily routine. Ask them questions about how they feel about their work. However, I would try to talk to more than just one. This because you may get a slanted view. In this way you can acquire valuable information.

There are many private institutions that offer cosmetology education to high school students. Most cosmetologists are paid either by commission, a monthly fee or an hourly wage. Tips are another source of income. Skilled cosmetologists make a considerable portion of their income from tips.
