How long can a hemorrhoid last?

It would depend on what treatment you adopt.

There are temporary treatment which shows effect immediately then the surgical method again which is quick. There are herbal methods too which can take a few months.

edit: It takes a while (up to a few weeks) if you don't change what you're doing - like sitting down all day. If you have a desk job, take a day off (like a Friday or a monday) and don't do anything. Use Preparation H and lay down, watch movies or something, but stay off your bum and don't workout!

Do everything you can to have smooth, wet bowel movements. Do not push really hard if you get constipated! (That is what caused my hemorrhoids and now they keep coming back (I'm only 18 too!).) Eat an entire can of green beans and drink a bunch of coffee if you don't have the gas to go.

Go when you feel the urge! Don't put it off. You're freshman comp. class is not as important as your body.

How do cows fart?

It's called "bowel movement". Nerves in the rectum and anus send messages to the cow's brain that the rectum is full and feces need to be expelled. Nerve impulses are then sent back to the rectum, anus and lower abdominal muscles to begin the waste-expelling-process. Smooth muscle contractions in the rectum push the feces to the anus in a similar matter that food is pushed down by the esophagus into the stomach chamber. The muscles in the anus relax, and the smooth muscle contractions as well as the abdominal muscles stimulate excretion of the feces. This continues until all fecal matter that has "lined up" to be excreted are expelled. All animals have this ability, including us humans. If the nerves that are responsible for excretion of wastes (or rather, control of impulses to defecate or urinate) are damaged, the cow will have to be put down. For pets, manual stimulation must be done every so often so that the animal can defecate or urinate. Often nerves cannot be repaired, and owners feel the better alternative is to put them down.

What are the similarities and differences between the small intestine and the large intestine?

The small intestine are divided into three sections. In order of the digestive tract, they are the duodenum, jujenum, and the ilium. The small intestines are responsible for absorbing nutrients from the chyme (chyme is what the undigested mixture of food and enzymes is called). The large intestines are divided intonine sections. They start at the iliocecal valve to the first section of the large intestine called the cecum, acsending colon, hepatic flexure (the hepatic flexure is where the colo takes a turn under the liver), transverse colon, the splenic flexure (the splenic flexure is where the colon turns downward under the spleen), decsending colon, sigmoid colon, rectum, and the anus. The large intestines are responsible for reabsorbing water and some electrolytes. It is in the large intestine that the chyme is called feces.

Can an enzyme from the stomach work in the intestine?

The enzymes of the stomach will be different from those of the small intestine. The presence of the bolus stimulates the small intestine to produce secretin, which in turn stimulates the liver, pancreas, and gall bladder to secrete various enzymes, whereas the proteases of the stomach are activated by the low pH.

Pepsin, a protease and protein-digesting enzyme of the stomach, is released by chief cells as pepsinogen. The highly acidic chyme (pH: 1.5-2) clips off some of the pepsinogen molecule, exposing its active region. Pepsin could not be made from pepsinogen in the small intestine however, due to the bicarbonate ions that are released to neutralize the chyme dumped into the duodenum, creating a slightly basic solution.

Similarly, the low pH of the stomach would immediately denature any proteins (enzymes) found in the rest of the body, like the small intestine. The enzymes used in the stomach are specialized for the extremely low pH, though other enzymes are not. Pepsinogen released into the small intestine could not function as an enzyme properly.

Why is your stool white?

Brown stool comes from a combination of bile from your liver and gallbladder, and bilirubin from old hemolyzed red blood cells. Without this combination you may get gray or clay colored stools such as when someone has an obstructing gallstone, or a mass in the liver or the pancreas. And just in case you were wondering, the odor of the stool is do to sulfur producing bacteria in the bowels. The more of these bacteria you have the more foul the smell will be, and the more gas youll pass!
