What does Franchise Player Mean in Pro Football?

User Avatar
The NFL Players Association and the owners agreed to allow teams to designate two players on their roster who are unrestricted free agents as franchise players. There are two types of franchise players ... exclusive and non-exclusive, and a team may designate one player as each. An exclusive franchise player may not negotiate with other teams. The player's team must offer him a one year contract which is A) 20% higher than the player's previous season's salary, or B) the average of the top five salaries for players that play the same position. Whichever is higher, A or B, is the salary the player will make the following season. A non-exclusive franchise player must be offered a one year deal the same, A or B above, as the exclusive player, however, he may negotiate with other teams. If the non-exclusive player signs an offer from another team his current team has the right to match it and keep him on their roster. If his current team does not match the offer they will receive two #1 draft choices from the team the player signed with.

How much is a Jerry Rice autographed SF 49's shirt worth now that he is in the Hall Of Fame?

User Avatar
A jerry rice signed shirt/jersey is worth about $300-$1000, it all depends on the condition and if it is framed or not. And if you have it framed then make sure the frame is nice. It's not worth as much if the signature is faded. Make sure the autograph has a certificate of authenticity.

Who was the first black quarterback to start in the NFL and what year?

User Avatar
First black quarterback to start in AFL: Marlin Briscoe First black quarterback to start in NFL: James Harris The first black quarterback to start an AFL professional football game was Marlin Briscoe. Briscoe started a game for the Denver Broncos in the American Football League (AFL). This was a full 2 years before the league merged with the NFL. James Harris was the first starting black quarterback in the NFL. He started 2 games for the Buffalo Bills in 1971, after the Bills entered the NFL. Although the leagues merged their records books as part of the merger, to not make a distinction between the leagues in a matter is simply wrong. An analogy would be how Major League Baseball maintains records and refers to such events. Jackie Robinson was the first black player in the Major Leagues with NL Brooklyn Dodgers. However, Larry Doby broke the color barrier in the American League with the Cleveland Indians. Like Robinson and Doby, Briscoe's and Harris's milestones are separate events. Marlin Briscoe played for the Denver Broncos as a rookie, he started 14 games with 1498 yrds and 14tds. The next season he was converted to wide receiver and was also part of the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins. He still holds many of the Broncos' rookie records. There is a film in production about his life. Briscoe's book, the somewhat mis-titled "The First Black Quarterback: Marlin Briscoe's Journey to Break the Color Barrier and Start in the NFL" can be found at Amazon.com although they only have autographed copies listed. You can visit the links at the bottom of this answer to learn more about his life and the texts (books and movies) being developed about him.
