No. Dimension-wise, they are similar, but there are differences in neck angles and case thickness. .223 Remington ammo can be fired in a 5.56 chamber, but 5.56 ammo should never be fired through a .223 Remington chamber.
Caliber is in reference to the diameter of the bullet. A .40 (which is what I have) is .40 inches in diameter. A .50 caliber is .50 inches in diameter (half an inch). So a caliber is the inches in diameter. Not including the 9mm which I cannot stand

PS- MOST rimless ammo headspaces on the MOUTH of the cartridge case. Where a revolver can shoot different length cartridges, the auto pistols are pretty well tied to the exact length cartridge.

Couple of different answers to your question. With a FIRED bullet, grooves that spiral around the bullet are ballistic markings- lines engraved by the rifling in the barrel. In the case of grooves that run around the bullet, and filled with a waxy substance, those are grease grooves that hold lubricant. A single groove with no filler is a cannelure- spot for the cartridge case to be crimped into to hold a bullet snugly before firing.
