I was not aware that any insect secreted lac, and have always thought it to be a substance produced by the wings of the lac beetle. When I was a kid I used to mix shellac as an apprentice painter, and this was used to paint onto knots in timber to fix the knot prior to painting, which prevented the knot from popping or bleeding into the paint. I used to use meths to melt down the lac flakes. In addition to this traditional way of producing knotting there was a Patent Knotting, which I understood to be an artificial form of Lac.
