Because the carbine has a shorter barrel than the rifle, at the time the bullet passes the gas port the gas behind it is higher pressure. This means the carbine will flow more gas at higher pressure into the action during the firing cycle than the rifle. The mass of the buffer and the spring constant of the buffer spring must be matched to control the energy provided by this flow for reliable operation (ie- don't unlock the bolt and attempt to extract too soon or too late).

You can actually get a variety of buffer weights to help address timing problems. Lots of folks with worn barrels (eroded gas ports) find that going to a higher mass buffer can let them maintain reliable operation and delay barrel replacement, though accuracy still suffers from the wear.

Actually, the above is incorrect. The manufacturing process for an AR-15 is the exact same as for an M16; the sole difference is a very minor mechanical one - the M16 is designed for selective fire (the option to fire in an automatic mode), while the AR-15 is semi-automatic only.

Depends. What is the caliber of the AR-15 rifle? If it marked 5.56, yes. If it marked .223, no. While you MAY fire 5.56x45 ammo in a .223, they are NOT the identical cartridge, and it is not a good (or safe) practice. .223 ammo can be safely fired in a rifle chambered in 5.56 mm. The 5.56 chamber is cut a bit longer than .223 to help insure operations in the field in the presence of dirt, etc. 5.56 NATO ammo is also loaded to a higher pressure than .223. So- to recap- 5.56 in a .223- NO. .223 in a 5.56- yes.

An assault rifle is defined by the US State Dept and Dept of Defense as a "lightweight, select-fire rifle firing light to intermediate power rounds". The term "select-fire" means the rifle can fire EITHER semi-automatic or full automatic by the use of a selector (usually a switch). Since a TRUE assault rifle can fire full-auto, they are heavily regualted by the 1934 National Fireamrs Act.
