For the 1947 Penny, there will be a small dot after PENNY (PENNY.) if the coin is minted in Perth and no mark at all if it was minted in Melbourne. This mintmark convention only holds true for most Pennies minted between 1937 and 1964. Another means of identifying Pennies minted in Perth are a very small KG on the right between the last "A" of AUSTRALIA" and the tip of the kangaroos tail on the 1940 and 1941 coins will have a dot beween them (K.G) or, a small dot after AUSTRALIA (AUSTRALIA.) on the 1952 and 1953 coins.

Australia has never produced a Sovereign or Half-Sovereign coin as a part of its currency.

Prior to Federation, the Australian colonies produced Sovereign and Half-Sovereign coins for Britain during the later part of the 19th Century, from about 1870.

Also, Sovereign and Half-Sovereign coins were produced at the newly opened Sydney branch of the Royal Mint in about 1855 with the word AUSTRALIA on the reverse. It should be noted that at this period of history, Australia was a very loose confederation of Colonies governed from Britain. There have been a number of non-circulating legal tender coins issued by the Royal Australian Mint (RAM) Canberra and Perth commemorating the "Holey Dollar".

The "Holey Dollar" is a relic of Australia's Colonial past. Britain was unable to keep the colonies supplied with coins of the realm due largely to the expense of the Napoleonic Wars.

Governor Lachlan Macquarie acquired 40,000 Spanish Dollars in 1812. The centres were punched out resulting in the "Holey Dollar" and "Dump". The "Holey Dollar" was valued at Five Shillings and the "Dump" at Fifteen Pence.

These coins were recalled and demonetised in 1829 and melted down. There are less than 300 "Holey Dollars" known to exist, and approximately 1,000 "Dumps".

All Australian general circulation One Dollar coins are made from a copper, aluminium and nickel alloy and have a gold coloured appearance.

The only Australian One Dollar coins containing any silver would be Proof coins.

The 1847 British Crown (Five Shillings) is 0.925 fine silver coin weighing 28.35 grams and is 38 mm in diameter.

The coin is known as a "Gothic" Crown due to the style of inscription around the edges.

The obverse has a left facing, crowned, young Queen Victoria with the inscription "Victoria dei gratia britanniar reg f d".

The reverse has Crowned cruciform Shields with emblems in the angles. The inscription reads "TUEATUR UNITA DEUS ANNO DOM MDCCCXLVII" with the date in Roman numerals.

The edge inscription reads "Undecimo".

NOTE - The reverse of these coins is upside down to the obverse. This is normal.

With the possible exception of traders tokens (with the traders business name on them), there were no "Australian" Sixpences minted prior to 1910.
