Babe Ruth's best year is generally considered to be the 1921 season, in which he compiled the greatest statistical year in baseball history. He batted .378 with 59 home runs and 177 runs batted in. He had a record 857 total bases and an .846 slugging percentage.

One more statistic is important which is that he led the American League in walks with 144.

No one has ever hit more than 4 home runs in single game in the MLB.

Ruth batted and threw lefty throughout his career. He was an excellent left-handed starting pitcher during his early career with the Boston Red Sox before becoming the game's leading slugger with the New York Yankees.

He started as a pitcher, compiling an outstanding record (94 wins, 46 losses), but switched to the outfield because of his powerful hitting. Sold to the New York Yankees in 1920, he remained with the team until 1934; he played his last year with the Boston Braves (1935). He coached the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1938, but his reputation for irresponsibility prevented his obtaining a permanent coaching or manager's job. His prodigious slugging earned him the nickname "Sultan of Swat." In 1927 he set the most famous of all baseball records when he hit 60 home runs in a single season, a mark that stood until 1961, when broken by Roger Maris. Ruth hit at least 50 home runs in four separate seasons and at least 40 in each of 11 seasons. His career slugging percentage (.690) remains an all-time record; he ranks second in career home runs (714, behind Hank Aaron), runs (2,174, behind Ty Cobb), and runs batted in (2,213, again behind Aaron), and third in extra-base hits (1,356, behind Aaron and Stan Musial).

Ruth was on the Red Sox for three World Series (1915, 1916, 1918) and the Red Sox won all three. They beat the Philadelphia Phillies in 1915, Brooklyn Robins in 1916, and Chicago Cubs in 1918.

Not at the Major League level. Babe Ruth began to play semiprofessional ball in Pennsylvania and was signed by the Baltimore Orioles (International League) in 1914. That same year he was sold as a pitcher to the Boston Red Sox of the American League. The Baltimore Orioles franchise started as the Milwaukee Brewers (1894-1901) moved to St. Louis in 1902, and became the St. Louis Browns (1902-1953) then became the Baltimore Orioles in 1954. The franchise has no relation to the Baltimore Orioles of the International League that the Babe played with.

Brother Matthias Boutlier of St. Mary's Industrial School for Boy's (a reformatory) is accreditted with introducing Ruth to the game. Whether he influenced Ruth, no one knows for sure.

Babe Ruth's 714th and final home run came off of Guy Bush of the Pittsburgh Pirates at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh on May 25, 1935. It is said that the ball landed on the right field roof and bounded out of the stadium.

Babe Ruth wasn't traded. He was sold to the New York Yankess in January, 1920. The owner of the Red Sox at that time was a gentleman named Harry Frazee who had bought the Red Sox in 1916. He made his fortune as a theatre owner who produced his own plays. After the 1919 season, Frazee got in some financial troubles and was unable to make payments to his creditors. At the same time Ruth, who before the season had signed a three year contract at ,000 a year, was suggesting that he would sit out the 1920 season since he had broken the single season home run record in 1919 and that his salary was too low for someone of his stardom. Also, the 1919 season topped all others as far as revenues to the owners were concerned, which was more fuel for the Babe's argument. So Frazee, short of money and worried about a public relations fiasco, contacted the owners of the New York Yankees to discuss unloading Ruth. The Yankee owners agreed to pay 100,000 for him, ,000 upfront in cash and ,000 in the Novembers of 1920, 1921, and 1922.
