Actually, this is another example of how times have changed. I assume you mean "mulatto," an old word for someone of mixed race. 100 years ago, this was a very common term, and it was even used on census forms. But these days, the word is rarely used. Instead, "biracial" is much more common. I do not know whether there was a box for "biracial" when the future president was growing up, so I don't know how he filled out his census forms.

But it should be noted that Mr. Obama seems to identify with being African-American, which is another aspect of American culture-- in the old days, even if you had only one or two black ancestors, the culture still considered you black. The president has certainly never denied the white side of his family-- he was raised by his white grandparents, whom he loved dearly. But because he had dark skin and certain facial features associated with being black, that is what society decided that he was.
