Is it a balk if third baseman is holding a runner on in foul territory while pitcher throws to the plate?

Pretty much if the pitcher does anything other than pitch the ball while his foot is on the rubber, it's a balk. He must always disengage before doing anything else.

With that rule aside, the rest of the questioned incident is balk-free. A pitcher is allowed to throw to any base, occupied or not, to stop a steal attempt.

How will you determine if the ball pitched is a ball or strike?

A "strike" can be earned by a batter in one of a few ways. First, any time a batter swings at a ball and misses, regardless of the location of the pitch, a strike is earned. Second, a strike is earned when a foul ball is hit - unless the foul ball is hit with two strikes have already been earned. In this case, the pitch is simply a foul ball and is not counted as a strike. Finally, if a batter does not hit a ball that is delivered within the "strike zone," the pitch is a strike. The "strike zone" is a three-dimensional area with top of the zone halfway between the batter's shoulders and top of his uniform pants, the bottom of the zone is the hollow of his knee, the right and left boundaries are the edges of home plate. When a batter records three strikes, he has earned an out. A "ball" is any pitch that comes over home plate outside of the strike zone. The only exception to this rule is if the batter swings at such a pitch. In that case, it is automatically a strike, regardless of the position of the pitch. When a batter is delivered four "balls," he earns a "base on balls," a free pass to first base. Since the batter can walk to first, this is also known as a "walk."

In baseball how is the winner determined?

whoever scores more points in 9 innings ...or when the home team retires the visiting team in the top of any inning after 9 innings given they have a lead and the game went into extra innings. And they are runs not points.

When a player catches a pop-up and falls and has the ball in his hand when he hits the ground is it a catch?

well first it would be out and its like when derek jeter jumped into the stands to catch a fly ball the play would be over. so yes it would be a dead ball

What do dead-ball sitution mean?

it is a skill in football if you play football you have dead-ball skill.and if you do a head attack also do a spring attack in a football match.a spring attack is when you roll and you kick it high.

Can a base runner steal when ball is foul tipped into the catchers mitt?

Only in professional baseball and American Legion baseball is it legal to "take the catcher out" if he is blocking the plate. In all other leagues including high school and college the runner must try and avoid a collision even if it means going out of the baseline. If the catcher is blocking the plate without the ball or making a play on the ball then he can be called for interferring with the baserunner.

Although in American Legion and professional baseball it is legal to "take the catcher out" there are some unwritten rules about doing this, and although they are not violations of the rules and you will not be called out for it, your teammates will appreciate that you follow them as generally if you play baseball long enough you learn retalitation is an very real part of the game.

So if you are "taking out the catcher" -- try not to:

1. make direct contact with the catchers head

2. dont dive in at the catchers knees

3. keep arms tucked as not to intentionally/unintentionally elbow the catcher

4. Dont "show off" if you are ruled safe and the catcher drops the ball

A most respectable collision would be one in which you tuck your arm in and lead with the shoulder into the catcher's chest, touch the plate and wait for the safe/out call, then just walk to the dugout. If you do that, then generally nobody will have any issues as it is a clean play and just part of the game

*** American Legion Rules I am really not certain about as they tend to change their stance on issues every other year and also varies from state to state, so if someone knows for certain let me know.

When a pitcher touches the mound do they have to pitch that battter?

no. they can pick off to any runner or step off the rubber with their BACK foot. if there is a runner on third, he can step with FRONT foot to pick off to third if he does not step to home past the invisible line cutting from third to home at 45º. if he does it's a balk. he can turn and throw to second if there is a man there. in essence, no.

Why do right hand batters hit the ball to left field percentage?

Don't know the percentages, but left field is more common. Most batters are right handed, and, on averge, a batter is more likely to "pull" the ball when he hits it. (Note: when a batter is said to "hit to the opposite field", that means that a right-handed batter hits to right field or a left-handed batter hits to left field. On the surface, this is not "opposite field" at all. But it's called "opposite field" because it goes against the natural tendency of a right hander to hit to left field and a left-hander to hit to right field.)

Do runners at first and 3rd advance one base if a line drive is caught and in the process of doubling the runner off of first baseball is trown out of play?

if the run scores from third before the runner at 2nd is declared out the run stands if not then no run....i.e. in anything highschool level and under to little league a startegy its to get into a rundown in between 1st and 2nd allowing the runner from third to score

A balk is called with runners on base and the batter hits the ball for an out. What happens?

The balk is void if the ball is hit. Just as if there was no balk called. If your batter hits the balked pitch and grounds out then he is out. Runners advance at their own risk.

This is dependent on the league that is being played. In high school, a balk is immediate meaning that if the ball is hit it means nothing and the runners all move up a base. But in some leagues, it is a delayed balk. This means that if the batter reaches base and all runners move up a base the balk is waved off. At no point does the balk benefit the defense. A balk is a punishment to deceiving the offensive players or in this case the runners. So in reality the balk at no point turns void unless the offense benefits from the play.

Can a batter remove his helmet as he is rounding 3rd base after hitting a home run over the fence in a highschool game?

the only time a runner can remove his helmet is in the event that the helmet has impaired the runners vision. in that case the umpires would have the decision of the removal being within regulations or not. if it is not then the runner would automatically be out.

Another answer: In MLB, there is no rule prohibiting player from removing his helmet. However, rules in other leagues (college, high school, youth, etc.) may have such a rule. Consult your organizations rule book.

What is the record for most strike outs in one half inning?

You can't - only three outs. BUT you can have FOUR strikeouts in one inning. If the catcher drops the ball, the runner can go to first base, but no out is scored.

0-0 1 Out, runners on 2nd and 3rd

Fly ball

The runners both run home (2-0)

The ball is caught (2nd out)

The defender tags 2nd base (3rd out, score is now 1-0)

  • At this point, the inning is over. The defense may run off the field and the score will remain 1-0, OR they can tag 3rd base to record the 4th out and the score will be 0-0

Actually, from what you're saying, neither runner that scored tagged up. So when the outfielder caught the ball for the 2nd out, then threw it to second for the third out, the inning was over. The run does not count because the other runner never tagged up.

in other words, the first poster was right. It is impossible to have four OUTS in an inning.

the answer above is correct. the fourth out will only come into play if the defensive team appeals the runner from third not tagging up. if they don't then the run does count. if they do appeal the play the runner is out (the fourth out) and the run does not count

the answer above is correct. the fourth out will only come into play if the defensive team appeals the runner from third not tagging up. if they don't then the run does count. if they do appeal the play the runner is out (the fourth out) and the run does not count

Stealing a base on ball four?

I believe the correct ruling is that the batter would be awarded 2B. On ball 4, he is entitled to 1B without liability of being put, though the ball is still live. Once the pitched ball enters the dugout (dead ball territory), all runners would be awarded one base from the base occupied at the time of the pitch. So in this particular scenario, even though the batter had not actually reached 1B at the time the pitched ball entered the dead ball territory, I believe he would be awarded 2B.

Follow-up:I've researched this further, and found my above answer is wrong. If ball 4 goes directly into the dugout, the batter gets 1B only and all runner's on base get one base from the base where they were at the time of the pitch. However, if the pitch gets past the catcher, touches a defensive player, and then goes into the dugout, the batter only get 1B, but all other runners get two bases.

What happens if a hit ball hits the umpire standing behind the pitcher?

The ball is in play like any other batted ball and is considered fair whether or not it ricochets into foul territory after hitting the pitcher.

If the ball hits the pitcher on the fly and is caught by a fielder before it touches the ground, the batter is out. If a ground ball touches a pitcher and another fielder grabs it and throws the batter out at first base, the pitcher is given an assist on the putout.

When did the infield fly rule stop?

The infield fly rule still applies, and is in effect when the following situations are met: 1. Fewer than two outs 2. A fly ball is hit that an infielder can reasonably catch (umpires discretion) 3. There are runners on 1st and 2nd, or bases are loaded. 4. When the above conditions are met, the umpire will verbally call "infield fly rule" as soon as it is determined the ball is an infield fly. The batter is automatically out, and the runners do not have to advance, even is the ball is dropped. Note: This rule was established to prevent fielders from purposely dropping a fly ball to attempt a double play.

What happens when Catcher throws to first goes out of play how many bases?

By "out of play" I presume you mean in the dugout or into the stands, in which case, the batter gets 2nd base If the ball stays in play, the batter could get as far as they can advance.

Little League Rule 7.05 g 'states two bases when, with no spectators on the playing field, a thrown ball goes into the stands, or into a bench, etc.'

The two bases are awarded from the runner's position at the time of the throw. If the runner is running towards first base and the ball is thrown into the stands, he is awarded 2 bases (1st and 2nd)

If the runner has safely reached 1st base and the shortstop throws to first because the runner rounded too far and the ball goes into the stands, it is still 2 bases, but in this case it is 2nd and 3rd as the runner already occupied first at the time of the throw.
