Our circulatory system has features to help maintain blood flow and prevent pooling in the legs because the legs are normally down. We don't have as much for the upside-down position because we don't spend much time that way.

The main benefit of hanging upside down is stretching the spine. We spend so much time upright that the spine tends to compress. Occasional spinal stretching helps counter this. All of our joints benefit from gentle stretching through their entire range of motion, especially as we age.

They don't sleep BACKWARDS, they sleep hanging upside down from their feet. They sleep like that because they have no other way to sleep as their wings and small feet do not allow them to construct a den or nest.
