The country was to have a delegation of 185 athletes. On 20 July 2012, it was reduced to 184 athletes when Adrian Blincoe, who was to compete in the 5,000 metres, withdrew due to an ankle injury.

Likewise, karate, squash, golf, and roller sports are not part of the program.

The Long jump event was won by Irving Saladino of the Republic of Panama. This in fact was the first gold medal ever won by an athlete in this country.

On the first day Sunday August 10th he competed in the 400m individual medley. On Monday August 11th and Tuesday August 12th he competed in the 200m freestyle 200m butterfly and the 4x200m freestyle relay. On Wednesday August 13th he competed in the 200m individual medley and the 4x100m freestyle relay. On Thursday August 14th he competed in the 100m butterfly. On Friday August 15th he competed in the 200m backstroke. On Saturday August 16th he competed in the 100m backstroke and on Sunday August 17th he competed in the 4x100m medley relay.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) boss Jacques Rogge has promised a drug-testing crackdown at the Beijing Games.

But the use of drugs is now a tradition, dating back to when gold medallist Thomas J. Hicks, was given strychnine and brandy by his coach when he started to flag in the marathon at the 1904 Games.

In the mid-1960s, various sports federations banned doping, and the IOC followed suit in 1967.

The first Olympic athlete to test positive for doping use was Hans-Gunnar Liljenwall, a Swedish pentathlete at the 1968 Olympics, who lost his bronze medal for alcohol use. Dozens of athletes have followed in his footsteps, several medal winners among them.

The most publicised doping-related disqualification was that of Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson, who won the 100m at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, but tested positive.

In the late 1990s, after high profile drug scandals in cycling, the IOC launched a more organised battle against doping, leading to the formation of the World Anti-Doping Agency in 1999. Then American sprinter Marion Jones won five medals at the Sydney Games in 2000, but had to give them all back after admitting taking performance enhancing drugs.

The last Olympics in Athens saw around double the previous highest number of doping offences, which was 12 at Los Angeles in 1984. However, the reason is thought to be tougher tests rather than an increase in doping.

There was no Olympic Games in 1997. However, in the 1996 Games, Danyon Loader won gold in the 200 meter and 400 meter freestyle. Blyth Tait won the other gold medal for New Zealand in the 1996 Games in equestrian competition.

106 athletes from South Africa competed in the 2004 Games in Athens. South Africa won 6 medals (1 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze). The gold medalist was the 4x100 men's freestyle relay team of Roland Mark Schoeman, Ryk Neethling, Lyndon Ferns and Darian Townsend.

Beamon broke the world record by 55 centimeters in winning the gold medal. 2) Věra Čáslavská of Czechoslovakia won four gold medals in women's gymnastics. 3) Norma Enriqueta Basilio de Sotelo became the first woman to light the Olympic cauldron in history. 4) Al Oerter of the United States became the first track and field athlete to win the same event (men's discus) in four consecutive Olympic Games. 5) John Stephen Akhwari of Tanzania finished last in the marathon after falling and injuring his right leg and knee during the race. Instead of quitting, he continued on. He entered the Olympic stadium and finished the race more than an hour after the winner. But he finished!

Central sports officials in China have not said how high the bonuses they give will be, but the Chinese-language Sports Weekly reported they are likely to hand gold medal winners 350,000 yuan ($51,000) each, plus big payments shared out from sponsors.
