Can you give your dog benadryl to help calm him down and get to sleep?
You can use Benadryl to help your dog to calm down. The dose is roughly 1 mg per pound of his body weight. It can have side effects and should never be given to dogs with existing health problems except on the advice of a veterinarian, but is generally considered safe.
Do you take Benadryl allergy medicine in the morning or at night?
Any time of day, but note how many hours you must wait before taking it again on the package. In addition, Benadryl can cause drowsiness (it is also sold under the name of Unisom as a sleeping pill, actually), so don't take it with alcohol and don't take it when you will be driving or operating dangerous machinery or equipment--even in the kitchen.
Can you take Benadryl while on cephalexin?
Yes that would be fine. Benadryl is an antihistamine. Keflex is an antibiotic. Usually interactions happen when you take drugs from the same classification. Remember to take all your Keflex even after you start feeling better. You want to kill all the bacteria and not leave any hiding in your body!
Can Benadryl gel be used on shingles?
Unless you have a contraindication to using an antihistamine, you can use one safely when you have a varicella / chicken pox.
One complication of this infection is pruritis or itching.
Antihistamines can reduce the body's histamine level and quiet the desire to scratch.
When a person does scratch, they increase their chance of infecting themselves - due to breaking the skin.
Therefore, using an agent to reduce itching is a good idea.
It was once considered good to use a topical product like calamine lotion, but lately that is not favorable due to the drying skin and scabs that can be formed using some anti-itch lotions.
There are other methods to reduce the itch caused by varicella, including cool baths that do not dry out the skin.
No, an antihistamine is a drug that causes the histamine reaction in mucus membranes to be suppressed. That reaction when not suppressed, causes inflammation and discharge of mucos, itchy nose and eyes. Chickenpox is generally seen as a disease of the skin and although it can affect the mucous membranes it does not cause a histamine reaction in those cells.
Can you mix Benadryl and dextromethorphan?
Technically yes, but it is not recommended. The two drugs basically do the same thing, and, as opposed to mixing say naproxen, Acetaminophen, and ibuprofen, there would be no benefit - just more drowsiness and dry-mouth.
Can you die from overdosing on Benadryl?
not likely, the LD50 is too high. easier to die of tylenol overdose (but I really don't recommend it).
Can you take Benadryl and thyroid medication together?
You cannot take any other medication within thirty minutes of taking levothyroxine - also nothing to eat or drink in that time. Levothyroxine must be taken by itself. However, after that time is up you may take a Benadryl if you need to. Just remember it will make you sleepy.
Can you take benadryl and penicillin tablets at the same time?
I've been looking everywhere for an answer to this question but I can't seem to find a shred of evidence for either side. Common sense tells me it's probably okay but I'd never let my pup be a guinea pig.
My Labrador suddenly came down with a staph allergy so our vet put him on a cephalexin antibiotic regimen. Hopefully this will help him fight it and at least start to clear it up, but the problem is that the poor guy is going mad with the itching. I've been applying neosporin and hydrocortisone cream to all of the hot spots, and it helps (as long as I can keep him from licking it off until it soaks in) some, but there are just so many that it's next to impossible to cover them all.
I had been giving him benedryl along with the neosporin/hydrocortisone treatment, and it helped immensely. But now that he's on this antibiotic, I don't know whether it's safe to continue giving him benedryl.
While I think it probably wouldn't hurt him (especially since dogs have such a high tolerance to diphenhydramine) to mix the two, I don't want to do it until I know for sure. At this point I'm just smothering him in cream and hoping that the meds work quickly, but it hurts me to see him itching so bad. If ANYBODY knows anything on this subject, please let us all know. I'll ask the doc on Monday and hopefully I'll have an answer then. Again I apologize for not having a solution to this question, but I hope that the info I have given will help to some extent.

What kind of Benadryl can you give your dog?
You can give dogs the capsules, the same that people take, and the amount depends on your dogs weight. According to the North American Companion Animal the dosage is 2 - 5 mg per kg of body weight. However, it's always best to use the lowest effective dose, rather than start out with the highest allowable dosage.
For example, my pug weighs 25 pounds, which is 11.34 kg. So I give her one 25 mg capsule which works very well, even though she *could* have as much as 55 mg. This can be given every 6 - 8 hours, but I never give it more than every 12 hours, unless my vet recommends it.
Is hydrocortisone or benadryl cream better for itching?
Uses of hydrocortisone cream and benadryl cream overlap, so it might be a case of which works better for you.
Hydrocortisone is used without a prescription for the temporary relief of (1) minor skin irritations, itching, and rashes caused by eczema, insect bites, poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, soaps, detergents, cosmetics, and jewelry; (2) itchy anal and rectal areas; and (3) itching and irritation of the scalp. It is also used to relieve the discomfort of mouth sores.
Benadryl cream, Diphenhydramine, is an antihistamine used to relieve the itching of insect bites, sunburns, bee stings, poison ivy, poison oak, and minor skin irritation.
Caution on using benadryl on poison ivy and poison oak: According to a New York Times article, you should not apply products containing a topical antihistamine, like Benadryl, because it can cause a sensitivity reaction that makes matters worse.

Can you take Benadryl with depakote?
Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is an antihistamine used to treat allergic reactions, motion sickness, and the dystonic reaction caused by medications like Compazine and Haldol. It can be purchased over the counter, but it is also utilized via IV in the hospital.
Depakote (Valproic acid) is used as an anti-seizure medication, as well as used to treat other conditions such as migraines or bipolar disorder. It is only available by prescription, given in tablet form and can be given via IV in the hospital.

Can you take augmentin and Benadryl together?
Both medications are prescribed/taken together, but since the Benadryl is OTC, you should check with your doctor or pharmacist. If you are taking the Benadryl because you have gotten a rash from taking the amoxicillin, stop taking the amoxicillin and report the reaction!! You will need to insert a medical alert in your records that you have had an allergic reaction to amoxicillin...which means you will not be able to take any other member of the penicillin family: Augmentin, Cloxapen, Trimox, Bactocil, Veetids, etc..
Will benadryl show up as benzodiazephine in a drug test?
Yes it does. The chemical is diphenadrine Spelling??? If you are tested for anti-depressants, it will definitedly show up. I just failed one, that's how i found out. I also failed for benzos, and am told it can show up as a false positive, but only on a stick test, I will no more about that once the metabolite count comes back. I did take Valium a month ago, not sure whether that should still be coming up or not.
What happens if you drink expired Benadryl?
A few days after the expiration date won't kill you, but it isn't guaranteed by the company after that time and might lose effectiveness any later than a week or so, maybe even go bad. So unless it's an emergency, I'd replace it.
Can benadryl be taken by someone taking Ritalin?
It is not advisable. I personally use Fexofenadine (180mg, 1x a day) for allergies and Ritalin (10mg, 4x a day) for ADD. However, I found myself feverish when taking both at the same time, which lead me to believe there are counteracting components.
This was confirmed by both my general practitioner/allergist and my psychiatrist. The reason is quite simple; both drugs work against eachother. Antihistamines inhibits the action of histamine by either blocking it's attachment to histamine receptors or by catalyzing the transformation of histidine into histamine, that process might make you drowsy and can substantially lower your physical and mental response time. Ritalin (which has the active ingredient methylphenidate) has the exact opposite effect; it will make you (amongst others) more focussed, better motivated and/or increase organisational skills by increasing the levels of dopamine (neurotransmittor) in your brain. The two processes activated by antihistamines and Ritalin will work against eachother, which might cause nausea and can make you feel 'feverish'.
Now in plain language, antihistamines will make you drowsy and timid whereas Ritalin will make you awake and concentrated. Your brain goes nuts over activating the two different processes that are stimulated by the different drug types. As there is no clear solution to taking both, I was advised to not take them at the same time, but rather leave an hour or two between taking the Ritalin and the antihistamine. This is no definite solution, but might lower the complications for taking both.
It's also noteworthy that there is no real harm in taking both. It might make you feel uncomfortable, but it won't cause any damage to your health. Also, newer types of antihistamine like Cetirizine and Loratadine don't have the 'drowsy' effects and therefor might not interfere with the Ritalin in described ways.
