Beowulf

Beowulf's trick of pretending to be asleep allows him to catch Grendel by surprise when the monster attacks Heorot. By acting defenseless, Beowulf gains the element of surprise and is able to react quickly and overpower Grendel.

In sections X-XIII of Beowulf, the hero Beowulf returns to Geatland and recounts his battle with Grendel and Grendel's mother to his king, Hygelac. He presents the treasures he received from Hrothgar as gifts, and Hygelac praises Beowulf for his bravery and loyalty. Beowulf is then rewarded with a golden banner, an embroidered battle flag, and a sword for his achievements.

When Grendel approached the mead hall, the warriors inside were feasting and celebrating their victory. Grendel was angered by the noise and commotion, as he was an outcast who sought to terrorize and kill the men inside the hall.

Before Beowulf's arrival, the Danes tried to deal with Grendel by making sacrifices and offerings to appease him. They also attempted to fight him with their warriors, but Grendel proved to be too powerful for them.

Beowulf chooses to use his bare hands to show his strength and bravery, as well as to prove to the Danes that he can defeat the monster with his own physical prowess.
