Are bobcats harmful to people?
Bobcats don't generally present a hazard for people. It is possible that a big bobcat will attack a small child, but the probability is very remote. We don't generally let our little ones run around the woods. They could certainly make a mess of an individual they attacked, but they are much smaller than people, and would rather flee than get into it with an adult human, even with the formidable teeth and claws. These wild cats can present a hazard to pets and to smaller livestock in some areas. Perhaps one in twenty sheep that is killed by a predator is killed by one of these critters. The cats will take easy prey including your dog, but not generally. A link can be found below for more information.

Common den sites include fallen trees, hollow logs or trees, thickets, caves and rock piles. Some bobcats make their dens in abandoned or little-used barns and buildings. Viewed by many as a "wilderness species," the bobcat's shy, secretive habits allow it to live surprisingly close to people.
Bobcats are mainly nocturnal hunters, but may be out during the day as well. Bobcats eat at dawn when everything is calm.

I have seen bobcats as much as 47.3 pounds where I live, which is in Virginia. A cat this big will exceed 4 feet in length and a foot or so at the shoulder. There is some variation among the dozen subspecies. A link can be found below. Where in Va do you live?
I live in Rockbridge Baths ,Va.. .
Last evening ,at dusk ,I had a huge bobcat in my yard. It had to be at least 50 pounds. I had no idea they could get so big. It was down by our pond, 70 yards from the house.
The light was poor and I thought it was a ferrel cat or a fox because of the ears. We had to walk down to the pond to get a good look . We were 25 yards from it when we realized what we thought was the animals body was just the head. It was just lying there watching us. The cat did not seem to be afraid of us . It was so big we thought it was a mountain lion.
Our friends down the road drove over to get look at it. They shined their headlights on it, maybe 20 yards away, and it still just layed there.
Anyway, a few minutes later, it finally got up and slowly walked over the bank and into the woods. That was when we saw it had a bobbed tail and realized it was a very big bobcat.
It was easily 4 feet in length . I have to say , just the sheer size of the cat sent my pulse racing in fear, wow.

Thank you for the response. I left the site because there was someone rude responding to my questions. Have not seen the cat again, but found lots of scat in the road. Bought a trail camera and put it up last week. Hope to get some pictures, though doubtful.
Where are you in Va?
Maybe it is the same cat. This one was broader than my neighbors yellow lab but lower at the shoulder. It was a beauty! I called the game commission, they suggested we shoot it if we happen to see it again. Thinking it may be distempered because of odd behavior. We will not be killing it.
I did see a site that said the record for a bobcat is 48.something pounds. Killed in North Carolina. Why do people kill them?
A young man shot a 42 pound cat a few weeks ago. He weighed at our local hunting store.
Can a person have a bobcat as a pet?
No because you will need a very big backyard to put the bobcat and it might be dangerous to people that have not spent time to know the bobcat very well.
