Book averages are typically calculated by using the ending average of a certified league, providing the average has at least 12 games (or 21 depending on the situation).

If a player has bowled multiple certified leagues in a season, each league will have it's own book average, however the highest of the averages is what the bowler will be using normally for tournaments for the following year.

Therefore the distance between the 1 & 7 pin, the distance between the 7 & 10 pin, and the distance between the 1 & 10 pin, should always equal 36 inches.

It is impossible to get a 315 in bowling. A strike is worth 10pts + whatever you bowl on your next two throws. Therefore, the maximum amount of points you can get on each frame is 30. Since there is only 10 frames the maximum score possible is a 300.

Can you score 180 in bowling?

Any score from 0 - 300 is theoretically possible. A 180 game can occur several ways. Most 180s I've gotten had 2-3 open frames without a large sequence of strikes in a row. Any score up to and including 290 can be achieved in more than one way. Above that, there is only one possible way to get that score. For a list of scores and the probability of getting certain ones see below related link.

Why are bowling lanes oiled with more oil placed at the start of the lane and less at the end?

The start of the lane is where the most impact of the ball begins. As more and more balls are thrown on a lane, the oil is carried down the lane and the oil starts to shift more towards the mid and back end of the lane.

By having a dry back end of the lane, the ball can react better vs sliding.

How many bowling pins do you need to knock down to get a strike?

The minimum number of pins you would need to knock down to get a 260 would be 97: nine strikes in a row, followed by a 6-1 in the tenth frame.

Obviously, it's not the number of total pins that matter, but the number of strikes in a row; it's possible to knock down the same 97 pins and yet only score a 97 game.

What does it mean to roll a clean game in bowling?

A "clean game" in bowling is simply a game that has no opens. That means that every frame, the two shots equal 10 pins.

A mark is either a strike (10 pins in one shot) or a spare (ten pins in two shots). So a clean game would also be a game in which a bowler marks every game.

Note: Some bowlers do not consider it an "open" (frame does not equal 10 pins) if the first shot resulted in a "split."
