What are British gold coins called?

Britain has produced many different gold coins over many hundreds of years. The most common would be the Sovereign and the Half-Sovereign.

Other circulating gold coins from the past 300 years would include the Guinea, Two Guinea, Five Guinea, Half-Guinea, Third Guinea, Five Pound and Two Pound.

In more recent years there have been a lot of non-circulating gold coins minted.

There are many coins of gold appearance, but these are mostly made from a nickel brass alloy and are much more likely to be seen in circulation than genuine gold coins.

How much is a Georgivs 1940 penny worth?

I am assuming that you are referring to a British penny, although your question is in the US coins category.

This is a very common date and exists in two forms, single exergue line, above the date, and double line. The former is much scarcer and is the variety most likely to sell on eBay in decent condition and an uncirculated specimen recently fetched £115 but poor or average examples of either would be unlikely to sell for more than £0.99.

How could you find old coins?

See the related link below for a price guide to US coins. It doesn't point out the rare coins but you can pick these out yourself. Obviously rare coins are worth much more. Coins with a much higher value than others in that category are probably rare or semi-rare.

What does one pound look like?

Unless you meant THIS pound sign : £ , £(halfwidth & fullwidth variants, respectively).

The L shaled sign probably comes from libra, literally pound (the weight unit).

This would also explain the ethymology of many currencies

called "Lira" (L./₤/Lit. ,₺, Lm, £sd, £S, ل.ل. , I£/ל"י‎ ) as well as the Livre Tournois (₶).

I think the lb bar sign (℔) might also have been used as

a scribal abbreviation for libra (the weight pound), although I cannot confirm... see if you can contact a typographist, or a historian, or somethiŋ...

Oddly, the currency sign of þᵉ gꚙd ol'

Roman Semuncia sign (𐆒) also looks like a fancy L...

maybe it's unintentional & the gliph was actually

supposed to be a fancy long s (ſ / ʃ)?

Any where from ten to fifty dollars.

Why are one and two pence coins covered in copper?

Because the founding fathers (along with the founders of almost every other country) wanted their coinage to be as close to the intrinsic values of the metals as possible. Making a 1 cent piece out of silver would be far too hard because it would be easily lost and would be too small to really use, making it out of gold would be even harder, so the only solution would be to make it out of copper (actually, there were proposals and trial coins minted with a small amount of copper with a hole and then a silver "plug" would be inserted to equal one cent, this design was scrapped when it became evident that it would cost more to make than it was worth with the added labour costs) in fact, the older pennies were much larger than the small coins we have now, they were more similar to a half-dollar in size than a penny we use today, this was because of how large they needed to be to equal approximately a cent of copper (keep in mind that during this time we had a gold standard and a dollar was equal to 1.604 grams of gold). Today however, rampant inflation and the demise of the gold standard means that pennies used today are actually zinc with a small layer of copper on the top of them. Pre-1982 pennies are actually worth almost 3 cents a piece in copper content, however, because they are illegal to melt down or export, there are few people who will buy them at their true value.

One penny of Edward vii in 1808 worth?

There is a problem with this..... Edward VII reigned from 1901 to 1910, so unless you mistyped the date the coin is a forgery. If you meant to type 1908 then it might, depending on condition, be worth up to about £5

How much money is a 1920 British 1p coin worth?

There was no "1 p" coin issued by Britain in 1920 ("p" refers to the decimal pence that came into being in 1968). There was a 1 Penny coin (abbreviated as "1 d") issued in 1920 - it is a large (abot 9.45 grams) copper coin, and its value (according to the Standard Catalog of World Coins) is US$0.80 in Fine condition, US$2.50 in Very Fine condition, US$17.00 in Extremely Fine condition, and US$50.00 in Uncirculated condition. A small number (less than 2,000) small silver pennies were also produced in 1920 as part of Maundy money sets; these are worth about US$35 in Uncirculated condition and about US$45 in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.

What is the silver coin dated 1890 Queen Victoria on one side and a rider on a horse with a sword stabbing a dragon?

Does legal tender ensure the acceptability of money?

"Can Legal Tender be refused as payment to settle a debt?", the short answer is no, but there are a lot of "buts" and "what ifs" with Legal Tender and it varies from country to country.

As far as Great Britain is concerned, any demonetised coin or banknote such as the One Pound note or the Half New Penny, etc. are no longer Legal Tender.

1 and 2 Penny coins are Legal Tender in amounts up to 20 Pence.

5 and 10 Pence coins are Legal Tender in amounts up to Five Pounds.

20 and 50 Pence coins are Legal Tender in amounts up to Ten Pounds.

One, Two and Five Pound coins are Legal Tender up to any amount, as are banknotes.

The currencies of Scotland and Northern Ireland are not Legal Tender in England and Wales (and vice-versa), but are accepted on the basis of them being a Promissory Note by mutual agreement between the banks concerned.

A shopkeeper is entitled to refuse payment if the coins or banknotes are mangled, mutilated or torn or, he cannot make change for a small purchase from a large banknote.

An unacceptable coin is one where the main design features cannot be seen clearly for any reason. An unacceptable banknote is one that may have been torn in half or been washed and the colours and design are no longer visible or the paper is pulped.
