Bruises (contusions)

Bruises are formed when an impact on the skin breaks capillaries and causes bleeding into skin tissue while the skin does not break. Bruises change color over time as the body begins to heal itself. In most cases, it takes a bruise about 2 weeks to repair itself.

Can a cerebral contusion of frontal lobe occur without fracture skull or laceration of scalp by direct blow?

User Avatar

Asked by Gopalberi

Yes, in fact it is quite common, especially in car accidents or falls. The brain has some ability to move within the skull, and if the head is hit from behind and the brain then hits the front of the skull, this is called a "contracoup" injury. So there may be a laceration or skull fracture in the back and a frontal lobe contusion, or there may be no noticeable damage on the head. CT and MRI may also be normal, by the way. We generally call the symptoms that ensue from this type of injury concussion and then post-concussive syndrome. It may include headaches, memory problems, dizziness, etc.

Most likely it is a tear or rupture in the pectoralis major. If you are someone that lifts weights quite a bit, it probably happened during bench pressing. However it can occur in sports as well if you are pushing off the ground or a similar movement. Do you recall a sharp pain you felt during sports or weightlifting?

How do you make bruise look worse?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes, rubbing a bruise can make it worse. It encourages circulation, which will make the bruise bleed under your skin more. It can also spread around the blood that has already pooled in the area. At the worst, if there is a clot present, it can cause it to move.

Are dark bruises bad?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Bruise coloring goes through a natural progression. At first, it can look purplish or pink to reddish. This is because blood from cappillaries (very small blood vessels) has leaked into surrounding tissues.

Within a day or so, bruises can look brown or black showing that the previous bleeding under the skin is "old". From the moment a bruise occurs, the body sends natural defenses to the area to do "clean up" inside and help it heal. Macrophages is one of the primary defenses; they are like little "Pack Man" parts of each cell that go in and take out the tissue bleeding. They bring more oxygen into the area to help healing; this is why bruises sometimes feel hotter than other skin.

After 3 days to 2 weeks, bruises can take on a rainbow of colors, from pink, purple, black, green, etc. The changing color again indicates how long ago a bruise happened. None of these colors are worrisome, although they can look quite bad.

If a bruise develops a lump, or if you tend to bruise easily, you should see a doctor to get it checked out.

How can you heal a bruise quickly?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

When first noticed, put ice on it. Keep it on 15 minutes a day for 2 or 3 days. Also, to stop blood flow, whenever you get the chance, lay down on a couch or bed, and put some pillows underneath your leg or arm or wherever your bruise is. You want to keep it elevated above your heart. On the third or fourth day, start taking hot baths (as hot as you can stand) or take a washcloth and drench it in hot water, then apply to skin with pressure. Keep alternating these steps every few days. It takes time for a bruise to heal, but if you want it to go away quicker, use these steps. If the bruise doesn't go away after two weeks after using these steps, consult a doctor.

What is a good cover up makeup for bruises?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Bobbi Brown Corrector. It's usually used as a concealer for intense dark circles, but if you got a darker shade, it would work as an excellent cover-up. Apply with the double headed Essence of Beauty foundation brush (inexpensive and excellent quality, available at CVS) with the concealer side of the brush and blend with the other side. If the bruise is extremely dark, I suggest buffing or "patting" the concealer in with brush, not blending.

Can a bruise be caused by micro organisms?

A graze is initially caused due to abrasion with a hard surface, a fall that breaks the skin, for instance. Micro organisms may later infect the graze unless the wound is cleaned with antiseptic cream or solution, and then bandaged or covered with a plaster, to keep the wound clean.
