Several court cases have ruled that a buttefly knife does not match the legal definition of a gravity knife, therefore they are legal:

In People v Zuniga, 303 AD2d 773, 759 NYS2d 86 (2d Dept 2003), the Appellate Division held that possessing a "butterfly knife" did not constitute a "gravity knife." The butterfly knife requires manual locking and thus does not come within the definition of "gravity knife."

Similarly, in People v Mott, 137 Misc2d 757, 522 NYS2d 429 (County Ct 1987), the judge inspected the knife and recorded his observations: "Such a knife is a folding knife with a split handle. In the closed position, the knife is covered on each side and at the point by two metal guards attached to the blade's base. To open the knife, the metal guards are folded back until they meet and are clasped and thereby form a handle for the blade." Again, the court held that the butterfly knife did not constitute a "gravity knife."

In People v Dolson, 142 Misc2d 779, 538 NYS2d 393 (County Court 1989), the judge stated: "While this appears to meet the first part of the statutory definition of a gravity knife, an important difference exists here. The blade of the knife recovered from Appellant does not lock into place 'when released' from its cover."

No one here is going to research the laws of all 50 states to satisfy your curiosity. Incidentally, most state laws do not describe them as "butterfly" knives. They are usually covered under the classification of "gravity knives" and occasionally referred to as Balisongs.

No! They are not. They are classed as an offensive weapon (a flick knife specifically) under the Restriction of Offensive Weapons Act 1959.

Under this act, it is illegal to import, sell or carry a flick knife or a knife that has a blade, hidden within the handle, released either by gravity or mechanical operation (ie: a butterfly, or a Balisong knife.)

Therefore, butterfly knifes are not legal in the UK.

butterfly knives are legal but they must be under 3.5 inches. Balisong trainers are legal however.

It depends. Balisong Knives (Commonly known as Butterfly Knives) often fall under the category of "Gravity Knives" which are illegal. (These are knives opened through Gravity). Thus, you may be able to talk your way out of having your Balisong taken or being arrested for it, but in court, it's likely the judge will find it illegal.

The safest way is to get a trainer which is a blunt Balisong with holes drilled so you can't sharpen it. Also, the most popular company for Balisong's is Benchmade who owns the copyright of Butterfly Knives and produces "The Butterfly Knife". You know what I mean if you ever watch videos. Everyone uses a Benchmade.

Not illegal to buy, sell, posses, or flip in private, but I never take mine out in public. Title 21, section 1272 is a bit fuzzy on the subject. I suppose it would depend on the prosecutor, judge, etc. to determine if it qualified as a "switchblade." We all know it isn't, but authorities and people in general take the Hollywood idea for this kind of knife.

Basically, just don't carry it in public. Fine to own and learn to flip.

Yes but the blade must be under 4" if any longer than that it is a violation of MO law to carry if it is over 4" it is illegal to carry but you can keep it at home. You can also go around the law by getting a balisong trainer--a balisong without the blade. It is legal almost everywhere. You can even get a model that is a bottle opener.

yes you can as long as the blade is 4 inches or less if it is above 4 inches it is illegal and you could go to jail if they catch you but im not sure how long you go to jail

Switchblade knives (including butterfly knives, or balisongs) are LEGAL in Texas as of September 1, 2013. House Bill 1862, which was passed during the regular session of the 83rd Texas Legislature and signed by Governor Rick Perry, struck the previous ban on switchblades (Texas Penal Code Section 46.05[a][5]) from the law.

As of September 1, 2015, Texas state law (Texas Local Government Code Section 229.001) also preempts municipalities and counties from creating or enforcing knife ordinances that are more restrictive than state law. House Bill 905, which was passed during the regular session of the 84th Texas Legislature and signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott, added knives to the list of weapons (a list that already included firearms, air guns, and explosives) that municipalities and counties cannot regulate.
