a 1948 penny is worth about 5 cents if it is in bad condition, but if it is ok condition it is probley worth about 10 or 15 cents and if it is uncirculated it's worth 50 cents.

However, the surface oxide layer is not very thick, so in practical terms the difference is going to be small (and since the total mass of a current US penny is 2.5 grams and only 2.5% of that is copper, even if every bit of copper were totally oxidized we're talking about a mass difference of well under 1%).

1949 is a special year for Canadian dollars because it was a Newfoundland commemorative dollar.

There were a surprisingly small amount of them made, BUT there are still alot available. I see them sell anywhere from $10.00 to $200.00 depending on condition.

This is technically a current issue coin worth only 5 cents Canadian (about 4.5 cents U.S.). However dates prior to about 1995 are being gradually withdrawn from circulation because they contain slightly more than their face value in pure nickel. Not worth hoarding by any means.

All US nickels, regardless of minting date, weigh 5.0 gm.

Canadian nickels up to about 1999 weighed 4.54 or 4.6 gm; those minted after that date weigh 3.95 gm but there are exceptions due to mid-year composition changes.
