613 Questions

Are catfish endothermic?

No, catfish are not endothermic. Endothermy uses methods such as shivering, sweating, panting, storing and burning fat to keep the body temperature at a constant rate. Catfish, and indeed all fish are actually poikilothermic. This means that there body temperature rises and falls with their environment. When a fish is in cold water their body temperature falls to match it, and when it moves to warm water it rises again. Fish can move deeper in the water too cool down and swim higher when they need more warmth. By doing this, the fish is able to regulate its body temperature.

Can catfish and tilapia live together?

This will largely depend on which catfish and which loaches you choose and how you set up their tank. The most common loach that people buy is the clown loach. In my opinion it should not be offered for sale to beginners. It grows to almost a foot long and needs to be kept in groups. Needless to say it requires a very large tank. Provided they are given space and fed well, there is no reason other catfish cannot be kept with loaches, even large ones, but again this calls for common sense. Obviously, if you put tiny Corydoras hastatus (2.5cm adult size) in with foot long clown loaches, they will vanish overnight. However, most of the large corydoras are suitable to keep with most of the loaches. Virtually all plecos are 'loach-safe' but a lot of plecos can be two foot monsters - again, research the species before you buy and make sure you can accommodate it when it's no longer a four inch long cute suckermouth. Also, if you are going to put a lot of bottom feeders in your tank, you will need to feed accordingly. Feed food that sinks, either sinking wafers or pellets, or chunks of meat or heavy vegetables. I don't recommend feeding meat or fish often, if you want to provide protein, use shellfish meat. Plecos and most loaches are largely vegetarian. Use bulldog clips to hold down pieces of zucchini (courgette), cucumber, peas, pumpkin, broccoli, lettuce etc.

When do catfish bite the most?

catfish will bite a lot of different things, i usually use:

crawdads

cut up shad

minnows(dead or alive), the only problem with live ones is that they will attract other kinds of fish like bass and walleye.

raw meat

sardines

cheese

i get to the river or lake around evening, cast out with a 3-5 ounce bullet sinker, and a treble hook with a crawdad or a piece of cut up shad on it. then i reel my line in a little until its tight, and i usually bring a chair and something to rest my pole on. then you just sit there watching your rod tip, and if one hasn't bit in about 15-20 minutes i reel in, rebait, and cast somewhere else. i always cast in 2 or 3 poles at the same time so i can try out multiple spots.

and i always tie on a 6" metal leader before my hook, cause fighting catfish really can tear up the line, and it will eventually break it cause of their teeth.

the best fishing goes on mid summer, evening or after dark, not too far off the shore in probably 2-10 foot deep water. they come up into the shallows at night to look for food that has washed up during the day. the fishing is also really good under dams at some lakes, there will be a big deep pool where you can catch nice ones all day.

in rivers its a lot easier to find deep pools, and that's where they all are in rivers and streams. course you can find them pretty much anywhere, and it varies from place to place. you just gotta go out and do some experimenting.

good luck!

I fish for cats in the river and the best thing to use, in my opinion, would be wet cat or dog food in some panty hose. the pany hose will keep the wet fod intact in the rough waters. it sinks so you don't have to worry about sinkers, just a bigger bobber. works every time for me.

How do you catch catfish using baited jugs?

It depends on where you're fishing.

First off, go online and find the local fishing report for wherever you're fishing, example : google "Lake Pomme de Terre fishing report". This will tell you what species of catfish have been biting lately, and more importantly what they're biting on.

If you're using prepared meat, such as beef liver, chicken gizzards, or hot dogs, you can use a treble hook (about 3/4 inch from point to point) or just a large rubber worm hook, and just thread the meat on to where it is secure. You can even use a series of barrel swivels (with quick-snaps) to rig multiple hooks on a single line.

If using commercial catfish dough, mold it into a ball and smush it onto a medium size treble hook. However, dough likes to fly off when you cast it. I bought some dough bait rigs from Bass Pro http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_58187____SearchResults and these have worked well.

If you're fishing in a pond or small lake, no weights or floaters are needed, as the bait will sink and catfish are bottom feeders. If fishing in a river or lake arm with a current, add a few casting sinkers or splitshot weights to the line to keep the bait on the bottom. Good luck!

What do catfish pond eggs look like?

Their a yellow brownish type with brown dots on the body, they have 6 fins, and whiskers, 2 on the top alot more on the bottom, then a yellow line going through the body. This might just be the image that I'm looking at but I'm pretty sure that's what all catfish look like. Go look it up on Google.

Is anything poisonous about catfish?

No, but they can inflict a wound that can become enflamed or infected. If you are ever finned by a catfish, make sure to clean the wound. If you are fishing in the ocean, use ocean water as a temporary cleaner. When you get home clean the wound. If you are fishing in fresh water, try to clean it with bottled water temporarily until you can get home to clean it properly.

If you get finned so badly that the bleeding won't stop. Go to the nearest Emergency Room. The fin might have hit a blood vessel.

Are cichlids compatible with catfish?

There are so very many different species of fish known as 'catfish' that it is impossible to give you an answer. Please say which species of catfish you are asking about. they are channel catfish The channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) could well be one of those fish that are very hard to keep with other species. The main reasons for this are twofold. First they are voracious eaters of anything edible, living or dead, so you would need to make sure that whatever species of fish you put with them was considerably larger than the catfish to avoid it being eaten and secondly you would need a larger tank than normal to house the catfish because they grow so very big. 20 kgs is not unusual for a channel catfish and finding another species that can live successfully alongside something that large would be very difficult. The answer to your question therefore is:- I don't know of any species of fish I could recommend as being compatible with channel catfish. Sorry.

How much food does a catfish eat per day?

If your Cory catfish is in a tank with no other fish species, it really doesn't matter. If you have other fish species with it in a tank I would try turning off the lights at night and feeding your Cory then. It will give your Cory a better chance of getting the food before another fish gets it because corys don't use their eyes to find food, they use their barbles.

How long do catfish live in saltwater?

There are some species of catfish that have a rudimentary lung, so those species can live out of the water for some time to find a better pond or even a mud hole. Most catfish should not be kept out of the water for any length of time unless it is unavoidable.

How long can a rainbow catfish hold it's breath?

rainbow catfish is actually not an animal, but a trucking company in mississippi.

since one of the only ways for a whole company to be submerged under water is by a flood, this is not likely going to happen.

a company is also composed of people, by definition, so therefore if a person can last at most a minute, a rainbow catfish can last at most a minute

Do eels eat catfish?

Ummm... pretty much all fish have scales! Dolphins and whales don't but they're mammals, not fish!

While most fish do have scales, there are many that do not. The shorter list would be which fish do not have scales. Some examples of fish without scales are catfish, angler fish, and sharks. In order for a fish to be kosher, it must have fins and scales. If you search for a list of kosher fish, then all the kosher ones will have scales.
