In 2002, Comic Relief and BBC Sport teamed up to create a new initiative, aiming to unite the sporting community and culminate in a night of sport, entertainment and fundraising on BBC One. The idea initially came from Peter Salmon, the then Director of Sport at the BBC, and Kevin Cahill, the Chief Executive of Comic Relief. Among the 20,000 milers who took part at London's Embankment were Lord Coe, Dame Kelly Holmes, Sportacus, McFly, Michael Watson, Tessa Sanderson, G4, Jamie Oliver and Sadie Frost.

Televised Miles were also held in Brighton, Southampton, Plymouth, Bristol, Cardiff, Belfast, Manchester, Glasgow, Newcastle/Gateshead, Leeds, Hull, Nottingham, Birmingham and Ipswich.

Children from Amsterdam, The Netherlands (The British School of Amsterdam) took part in 2008.

the children in need organisation is important because as a society we need to all raise awarness that there are children and there fanilies who have been neglacted or sexually and physically abused and there are even children out there who have no food or water and together as a society we could all help are people together because it doesnt matter where your from or who you are the only thing that matters is that those people out there need are help and together we could all help them.

You can also donate your time, however, charities may have restrictions on how old you have to be to volunteer or that you have to have an adult with you or have to have parent/guardian permission.

Nonprofits will usually provide whatever information that is being requested, within reason. Staff salary, personnel files, internal documents, client files and any other information that would be subjected to confidentiality or privacy laws or policies are not generally considered to be within reason. The information that is primarily requested are mission, vision and program descriptions, which are posted on the organization's website and also independent audits, annual reports and 990s, which are usually provided upon request and sometimes also posted on the organization's website. Most (but not all) nonprofits are not subjected to the sunshine laws, which allow the public to attend board meetings and the notice of such meetings to be posted. Board meeting minutes are both requested and also given out less often.

Charities by definition are non profit. The term comes from the IRS 501 c 3 distinction which allows certain nonprofits to accept charitable donations, meaning donations to the organization are tax deductible. There are other nonprofits that do not have that distinction and are not considered charities. Some charities own for profit subsidiaries or social enterprises, yet the charities themselves are still nonprofit. Some states, have introduced new corporate structures that both benefit society and are for profit, yet they are not charities. Non profit does not mean the agency loses money or has to break even every year and for profit does not mean it has to make money. Some nonprofits earn significant revenue and some for profit companies lose money. Nonprofit is a tax status and charitable is a distinction under that status.

There are many things that you can do to address needs in your community. The nature and scope of the need will determine how to best meet the need as a volunteer. Here are some examples.

Do you want to plant one or two shrubs in a small common area in your community? Get permission from local government, and just do it! You may have to present a plan on how the shrubbery will be maintained, and may face opposition or obstacles. However, you may be surprised at how easy it is to donate your time and resources.

Do you want to plant a lot of easily maintained shrubbery within your community? Again, get permission. Gather a lot of your friends, pick a weekend, and have fun planting the shrubs. Consider having a cookout or something afterwards.

Do you want to take on the responsibility for caring for all of the common areas within the community? This will require a great deal of thought and efforts. Ideally, you will go through a strategic planning process that will help you focus your mission, make appropriate goals, and find potential stakeholders in your venture that includes local authorities. You will need to perform all of the duties required in starting a business and will need to also apply for nonprofit status through the IRS.

Local charities are often more benefiting to both parties when involved in donation. Clothing, food and funds can be more concentrated on the needy in smaller communities. Larger charity corporations have wages, taxes, and other financial hurtles that shrink funds going directly to those in need after the other finances are taken care of.

When you think of a "not-profit" organization think of that a largely a taxing status, a designation for tax purposes. The only real differences between non-profits and for-profits is that non-profits can have access to courses of funds (government grants and other funds, foundation and trust funds, etc) which the for for-profits don't. And the non-profit exists for some good cause like provide counseling services or education and training or save the whales or whatever. Bottom line though is that non-profits largely have the same concerns as for-profits. They too need to pay the rent, utilities, pay its employees, insurance, etc. etc. Additionally, non-profits have a board of directors it needs to answer too. This board has the responsibility to ensure the money is being spent to provide the products or services the organization is intended to provide. In order to do that they have to have a budget and hence a financial report to track where the money is coming from and going to so they don't over spend, so they can keep their doors open.
