How do you calm down too hot chilli?

Peel a potato and put it in the chili. Simmer the chili with the potato in it for 15 - 20 minutes stiring occasionally. The potato will absorb some of the heat from the peppers. It will also absorb some of the salt, so taste the chili when you're done and see if you need to add salt.

Chili pepper as insecticide?

No, chili insecticide cannot kill insects. The home-made treatment instead functions as a repellent by driving away insects that tend not to like being around or transporting strong odors. When combined with diluted non-dishwasher detergent, it will serve as an insecticide, through the soapy component, to kill insects on the plant and a deterrent, through the chili ingredients, to prevent area insects from even thinking of coming near the plant in question.

What genre are the Red Hot Chili Peppers?

It depends on the time the music was recorded. Their recent stuff (since they stopped doing drugs) is pretty soft and alternative. Before that they did a lot of hard and phsychadelic rock.

How much dried chipolte Chile pepper is equal to fresh chopped?

It depends completely on personal taste or on the tastes of those you are cooking for.

In stews, soups and sauces, a good trick is to use the chilli whole and taste the food regularly during cooking. When the desired spiciness is reached, discard the chilli.

For salads, stir fries, and other dishes where the chilli is sliced and added to other foods for colour, flavour and heat, again it depends on personal taste. A lot of the heat is in the seeds, so unless you're looking for a very spicy result, split the chilli lengthways and scrape out the seeds before chopping or slicing.

Remember, as a rule of thumb, the smaller the chilli the hotter it is. Green chillies are frequently hotter than red chillies of the same variety.

To test any chilli for heat, cut off the end and rub it gently on the back of your (clean!) hand, and then lightly put the side of your tongue on the spot. This will immediately tell you how hot the chilli is.

If completely in doubt as to how hot your finished dish should be, don't risk causing discomfort to your family or guests: serve a little dish of chopped or sliced chilli for everyone to help themselves. Red and green chillies look good served together in this way.

Remember to always wash your hands immediately, in coldwater, after handling chillies, and when you've finished preparing food, use cold water for knives and chopping board as well.

Note: I've used the English spelling of chilli because my fingers simply type it that way automatically; in the US you'd spell it with one 'l' and in some places it'd be spelled 'chile'.

How do you pickle banana peppers?

Pickling is preservation using acids. The most common way is using vinegar. You will have to decide whether you wish to cook the peppers or pickle them raw, most of the time raw is what is done. Really, once you cover them in vinegar, they will keep for months in the refrigerator. And the Vinegar will absorb the heat and be a nice hot sauce.

Do hot chili peppers help a cold?

Some people claim hot chiles (hot peppers) can prevent them, but it is not proven scientifically. However, many people, including me, eat hot spicy foods and very hot chiles when we already have a cold, since they relieve the stuffiness in the sinuses and nose and also can help a sore throat. Capsaicin is the component in peppers that makes them hot and it has been found to be helpful for many ailments. Capsaicin can cause your body to release endorphins and make you feel better, as well as breathe better. It is worth a try as treatment to see if you have the same results, but the idea of prevention of infection with spicy food is currently based only upon anecdotal information. It sure can't hurt to try it, and you may really like it and turn into a "fire eater" Chilehead.

== == (Reviewed 8/07, updated 8/07) In this Guideline: * Symptoms * Comments on the disease * Management * Publication * Glossary ---- == Verticillium dahliae can infect pepper plants at any growth stage. Symptoms include yellowing and drooping of leaves on a few branches or on the entire plant. The edges of the leaves roll inward on infected plants, and foliar wilting ensues. The foliage of severely infected plants turns brown and dry. Growth of pepper plants inoculated with aggressive strains of V. dahliae in greenhouse or of pepper plants infected early in the season under field conditions is severely stunted with small leaves that turn yellow-green. Subsequently, the dried leaves and shriveled fruits remain attached to plants that die. Brown discoloration of the vascular tissue is visible when the roots and lower stem of a wilted plant are cut longitudinally. Another important soilborne disease of pepper in California, Phytophthora root rot, causes similar foliar symptoms; however, Phytophthora root rot causes extensive browning and rotting of the root cortex, while the roots of V. dahliae-infected pepper plants show no external discoloration or decay. == Verticillium wilt, caused by Verticillium dahliae, is a soilborne fungus that colonizes the vascular tissues of plants. Verticillium dahliae has a broad host range, causing vascular discoloration and wilt of many economically important crops. Microsclerotia produced by V. dahliae may survive under field conditions for up to 14 years in the absence of a host. The microsclerotia germinate in the vicinity of host roots and cause infection. Verticillium wilt is favored by cool air and soil temperatures. Peppers are resistant to isolates of V. dahliae from many hosts, and only certain strains of V. dahliae, such as those from eggplant and pepper, are pathogenic on peppers. In recent years, an increase in the incidence of Verticillium wilt on many types of pepper has been observed in the central coast of California, resulting in significant reduction in yields. == Resistance in peppers to Verticillium wilt is not common in commercial cultivars and is difficult to identify in pepper germplasm. Chemical control of V. dahliae using soil fumigation with methyl bromide and chloropicrin is effective, but not economical for pepper production in California. Because of the longevity of microsclerotia and the broad host range of V. dahliae, crop rotation is usually not a feasible option for control of Verticillium wilt in many crops. However, rotations with broccoli, corn, wheat, barley, sorghum or safflower for a period of at least 2 years (the longer the rotation, the better) can reduce inoculum. These crops are not hosts for the Verticillium pathogen, and populations of the pathogen will decline in fields where host plants are not present. In any case, do not replant peppers in the field for a minimum of 3 years.
