How did the expression happy as a clam come about?

This saying originated in the early 1800s in the northeast United States, where they eat a lot of clams. At first blush, the phrase seems kind of weird—what could clams possibly have to be happy about?

Turns out our modern idiom is missing some key context. The original phrase was actually “happy as a clam at high tide” or “at high water.” Clams can only be harvested at low tide, so they’re safe and therefore presumably happy at high tide. It’s not completely clear how or why the phrase got shortened, but the meaning has remained pretty much the same.

How long can a clam live once shucked?

Saltwater clams can live out of water for a few days. By a few I don't mean a week, I'm saying 2 or 3 days tops at room temp, but it's a good idea after buying saltwater clams if they haven't purged already, to put them in a bucket and let them purge themselves for a day and if you don't eat them right away put them in the fridge to keep them cool and slow down their metabolism.

Also, if you are going to shuck the clams to eat raw it's a good idea to put them on ice first for a while or the fridge, this makes it easier to get the shell open when using the shucking knife.

If you are allergic to shellfish are you allergic to all shellfish?

Not necessarily. Shellfish allergies often come in different categories, like crustacean (shrimp, crab, lobster, etc.) or mollusk (clams, oyster, squid, etc.).

While most people who have shellfish allergies are allergic to all shellfish, that is not always the case.

An allergist can administer a test to determine what type(s) of shellfish allergy you may have.

Are raw clams good to eat?

Generally speaking they are very good for you. Some are toxic and some people have a low tolerance for some of them and hence are allergic.
