What does hydra symbolize?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Generically, Hydra are small, simple, fresh-water animals that can reproduce asexually by budding or sexually by producing sperm and eggs. They have tube-like bodies and a number of tentacles that contain stinging cells called cnidocytes that they use to catch their prey. They have radial symmetry. Hydras are predatory animals belonging to the phylum Cnidaria and the class Hydrazoa. They are related to such things as jellyfish and coral.

Specifically, THE Lernean Hydra was a serpent-like creature from Greek Mythology. It was an ancient water beast that possessed many heads and poisoned breath. It lived in the lake of Lerna in the Argolid, the site of the myth of Danaids. It was yet another offspring of Echidna and Typhoon, the children of Gaia, the goddess of Earth. Heracles, sometimes called Hercules, tried to slay the beast, but found that every time that he cut off one of it's heads, two more grew in it's place. Realizing this, his nephew told him to scorch the neck stumps with a burning firebrand after he cut off each head. Hercules tried this with every one of the heads, and eventually succeeded in destroying the monster.

Also, Hydra is also one of Pluto's moons (named after the mythological beast).

No, sponges do not have eyes. In fact, they don't have any organs at all. Sponges are among the simplest forms of multicellular life. They have simple tissues made up of different cell types, and some have support structures called spicules, but none have any of the true organs or organ systems that we see in more advanced organisms.

Is a conch a cnidarian?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No, they are two different phyla.

The comb jellies, commonly known as Ctenophora, are a phylum of animals that live in marine waters worldwide. Their most distinctive feature is the "combs", groups of cilia that they use for swimming, and they are the largest animals that swim by means of cilia.

The Cnidaria are another phyla of jellyfish. Their distinguishing feature is cnidocytes, specialized cells that they use mainly for capturing prey. Their bodies consist of mesoglea, a non-living jelly-like substance, sandwiched between two layers of epithelium that are mostly one cell thick.

Both Ctenophora and Cnidarians have bodies that consist of a mass of jelly with one layer of cells on the outside and another lining the internal cavity, but they are two distinct and different phyla.

How do cnidarians survive?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Cnidarians are divided in 3 main groups: the antozoan, syphozoans and cubozoan. The anthozoans are sea anemones and coral and cubazona are jellyfish. Most do not move around, but if necessary they move to get away from predators; the ocean current carries them. But, cubazonas, such as jellyfish, propel themselves to move by opening and closing their bell slowly.
