Cockatiels eat paper to keep themselves entertained. Usually they don't actually eat it, they just tear it up and chew on it. If you are uncomfortable with your cockatiels eating paper, you can try to distract them from the habit. Putting more toys in the cage might help.

Will an all gray cockatiel get colors as it ages?
Young grey cockatiels will usually get yellow wing and tail feathers, and coloured cheek patches as they mature.
Is a yellow tail on a cockatiel a male?
Not necessarily. Both males and females can have yellow tails.
There is also an urban myth that males have striped/barred or spotted tails and females do not. There is no evidence to substantiate this. There seems to be more evidence to support the contrary theory, that males have a solid slate grey underside to their tail, while females have a barred or mottled underside. However, it need to be noted that, with the many variations that have been bred into cockatiels since they became popular aviary birds, both males and females can have variegated tail feathers. Reputable bird identification websites will show that this is not always the case.
Why would a pet cockatiel sing to feet or shoes?
This seems to be a thing that cockatiels as a species like to do, since every cockatiel I've owned or met has had a thing for feet and shoes.
What you're seeing is courtship behavior. The bird (typically males do this) views the foot/shoe as a potential object of romantic interest and may whistle at it the same way he whistles at favorite toys or mirrors.
It's basically harmless, although you may want to make sure the bird doesn't start chewing on your shoes. I had to start tucking the laces inside my sneakers or the plastic tips would get chewed off.
Weiros (Cockatiels) eat a combination of seeds and fresh fruit such as apple, grapes, watermellon(rearly) and pear and they enjoy sun flour seeds as well.
yes it can, but since raisins can be sticky
a piece of the raisin might get stuck on the roof of its beak
What kind of breeding supplies do you need to breed cockatiels?
From personal experience of rescuing, adopting, and raising birds including cockatiels: There are many factors that must be taken into consideration before even thinking about avian breeding. I understand you would like an answer to this question but too many times have I seen or heard of birds being cared for improperly (not necessarily intentionally) so I am asking you to please answer the following questions for your safety as well as the birds.
Again, I do appologize for such amount of questions; I only wish to ensure that you and your birds can live happy lives in terms of your relationship as well as their physical well-being. And I assure you, there are many more concerns to be delt with and prepared for BEFORE allowing your tiels to breed. If you havent done so already, I encourage you to research this topic using several different sources, particuarly your avian vet which you SHOULD HAVE. I strongly urge you to NOT ask a breeder as they may give false or otherwise misleading information due to the fact that some breeders aim for genetic mutations while breeding their birds, not for companion animals. Hope this helped. Keep me posted and I will try to answer any other questions or concerns you may have.
How do you teach your cockatiel to say new words?
Repetition. Repeat, repeat, repeat. For example, if you want your bird to say hello to you every time you walk in the room, every time you walk in, say loudly and clearly, "Hello." And when you walk out say, "Goodbye." If you hear him attempt to reply (even if it sounds nothing like the word), give him a treat. Eventually, he will learn to talk. :) It may take a long time though.
Cockatiels mate when the male sits on the female for a few minutes. They both make a particular chirp when this happens, so you will know! This goes on for a few weeks. There has to be a nest box, or likely there will be no eggs. Once there is a box and the male has decided it's okay, then the female will lay her eggs. They will switch off sitting on them for about 18 days. You will know because the droppings will get HUGE and they will try very hard not to go in the cage. So let them out and take them to a floor that is easy to clean! They are holding it for up to 12 hours and they want to keep the nest and area around it clean. So help them by letting them out to relieve themselves. They will not want you near the eggs, but you have to check occasionally to see if one egg is dead (it will be a different color and smell). Take it out because the other eggs will die too! Then when they start hatching - don't touch - don't help. If the bird doesn't make it out - it would be dead soon anyway. The birds MUST come out on their own so they are hungry and chirp loud enough and for long enough that it will indicate to the parents they are healthy and are worth their effort to feed them. If they do not feed the babies and you try to feed the baby, it will die. The parents know if the baby is unhealthy. It's best if it passes quickly. The birds will all need a LOT of food of variety for many weeks as they feed the birds. It take many weeks for the birds to eat solid food on their own. Don't remove them early unless you are a experienced hand feeder and never before four weeks. If you handle the babies once they are two weeks old or so, they will be tame. Hand feeding is not a must if you are home and can interact with them. Respect the parents if they fight you when you are checking the nest. Try to do it when the parents are out of the cage. Never at night. You must remove the baby droppings from the nest often so that bacteria doesn't grow. Use pine in there and smoosh it down with your hand so it's "packed" so to speak. And have fun! The babies are pretty fantastic! Good luck! And if it doesn't succeed the first time (the babies die or the eggs don't hatch) take the nest box out for a number of months. The parents are tired even from the trying and need to rest. You don't want the mom to lay eggs over and over because she could die from exhaustion. So give them time and let them try again down the line. Some birds can do it, some can't. Just be patient. Good luck!
Why does your baby cockatiel fly when you hold it the wings are clipped?
Its wings are not clipped enough to prevent it from some flight. This is normal behavior for a young bird. More contact and handling is needed to make this bird feel comfortable with you holding it.
Do cockatiels have a flock leader?
Yes, cockatiels, like many other social birds, often establish a flock hierarchy where one or more individuals may take on the role of a leader. This leader typically exhibits dominant behaviors, such as preening or feeding others, and is often more confident while interacting with the environment. In a domestic setting, the perceived leader may be the most outgoing or assertive bird or even the human caregiver, depending on the dynamics of the group.
What does it mean if a cockatiel's crown is down?
If could be because it's scared if it's while you're trying to interact with it. If it's alone in the cage, it could be neutral or sleepy.
The top feathers on a cockatiel's head are known as the crest, not 'crown'. The usual position of a cockatiel's crest is down; this is when it is feeding normally, or not over-stimulated in some way. A cockatiel will raise its crest when it is alarmed or excited, so if the crest is down, it simply means that life is normal, and there is nothing for the bird to be particularly excited about.
What is the biggest cockatiel called?
There is no such thing as the biggest cockatiel beacause all cockatiel are small but cockatiels are from the cockatoo family, so its relative ( the cockatoo) will be the biggest.
How can you tell the difference between blood feather and primary feather on a cockatiel?
All feathers have a blood vein in them, but the primary, or flight feathers are to longest outermost ones on the wing. They should only be trimmed at the very end well away from the blood vein.
What do you need to make a cockateil nest?
Go to your nearest bird or pet store and get a nesting or breeding box then get some shredded material, pine not cedar! But this is only surface info please please go and find more information on nesting cockatiel websites.
How old do cockatiels start matting?
I'm pretty sure that cockatiels should be about 18-24 months when they start to breed. In other words, cockatiels mate after they age about a year or two.
I have a pet cockatiel, and after a week she won't shut up. She doesn't really sing, but whistles alot. If you whistle the same thing over, she'll learn how to say it. I taught her the wolf whistle, it's really funny! Male cockatiels are more vocal, though.
