How do make a coconut tree?

To grow a coconut tree, you first need a coconut. You can't use the small, round, brown thing you find at the grocery store though. You need to have the WHOLE coconut, with the husk intact. When selecting a coconut to grow, pick the healthiest looking one (no signs of rotting or mold), and make sure you can hear juice sloshing inside when you shake it. The coconut should have fallen from the tree on its own, and be a nice tan-brown color. (no green ones!) Before planting, soak the coconut in a bucket of water for 2-3 days.

You have to plant the coconut in a mixture of soil and sand (a 50-50 mixture should be fine). You should have it in a pot big enough that there is at least 1-3 inches between the coconut and the edge. Make sure to plant it pointy end down (the part that was once attached to the tree up). Bury it 2/3 of the way in the sand, so the top 1/3 is sticking out.

Water it regularly, and keep the soil nice and moist. BE SURE to have proper drainage, as you don't want to drown your coconut. Perhaps the most important thing, however, is temperature. Remember that coconuts are tropical plants and like it very warm. The soil temperatures MUST NOT drop below 60 degrees Fahrenheit for any extended period of time. The optimal soil temperature is 72 degrees. If you are having trouble keeping it warm enough (like me, a CT dweller), you can get a string of tube Christmas lights from wal-mart (any color is fine) and wrap them around the pot . I have only done this in a thin plastic pot, and it worked wonders. If you have a thick ceramic pot, you may want to line the inside of the pot with the lights before adding soil . They give off plenty of heat and will warm the soil nicely. You can keep tabs on the temperature with a cheap soil thermometer, available at your garden center. If it seems too hot, you may want to remove some of the coils until the temperature reaches the 70's again. The air temperature should be above 70 at all times, but even up to 100 is OK. If you have an old incandescent desk lamp, you might want to set it up as a kind of heat lamp over your coconut.

Once it begins to grow (can take 1 month to as many as nine, with the average being 2-3) you want to be sure to mist it often. Coconuts LOVE humidity. You should also try and keep the seasons correct. During the cooler months, you should barely water it. This can lead to root rot. During the warmer summer months, feel free to water it as much as you please, as long as it's draining right.

It may be a while before you are hanging a hammock off your tree, but coconuts can make great indoor/outdoor plants if cared for properly.

How does a coconut protect its seeds during travel?

In nature the coconut seeds travel in water inside the fruit. The fruit wall is so designed that its fibrous mesocarp adds to the buoyancy of the fruit and its endocarp is impervious to water. thus the fruit containing seed keep on floating for months togather and whenever it gets suitable conditions, the seed inside it germinates to produce a new coconut plant.

Coconuts are known to be tropical trees which are best grown in places where the climate is hot or what is known as the tropical regions. Can coconut juice kill you?

ORIGINAL ANSWER: of course not! in fact its actually really good for you! you can drink it! its awsome! trust me I've tried it!

IMPROVED ANSWER: No, coconut water (also known as coconut juice) cannot kill you. It is good at re-hydrating the body. One serving of coconut water/milk actually has MORE electrolytes and minerals than most sports drinks, like Gatorade/Powerade. It is low in fat, and is low in food energy. One serving also contains more potassium than a banana. Some countries actually market it as a sports drink. It is also used in third world countries in place of medical saline (the fluids hospitals use in IVs) because it is sterile, easily absorbed by the body, and does not attack red blood cells--it has the closest make up to our blood plasma. The only real "downside" to drinking coconut water, is that drinking to much of it can have a diuretic effect on the body.

How can you thaw frozen shredded coconut?

How you would thaw frozen food depends greatly on the type of food.

For meats, the best way is to move the meat from the freezer to the refrigerator and allow it thaw there. You should calculate the time it will require to thaw and move it to the fridge to allow for that time before you need to cook it.

You can also thaw frozen meats by placing it in cold water, changing the water every 30 minutes until the meat is thawed.

If you have a microwave oven, you can thaw foods in it, using the defrost cycle.

Some meats, such as a roast, can go straight from the freezer to the oven. It will thaw first, then cook, so you need to adjust your cooking time to reflect the extra time it will require to thaw.

The least safest way to thaw some foods is to allow it to sit on the counter at room temperature until it thaws.

Can you use coconut oil as a personal lubricant?

I guess it would, but it would be a poor choice. Vegetable oil can be irritating to the vagina. A much better choice would be a lubricant that does not contain a petroleum byproduct....like astroglide and Kroger brand K-Y jelly. If you want a natural plant based lubricant use something like Liquid Goddess that uses raw, micro-filtered extracts, not cooking oil!

What is creamed coconut used for?

Coconut milk is the strained juice from the meat of a fresh coconut. Many confuse the watery stuff found in the center of a coconut to be coconut milk wheras this is actually the coconut's stored water supply. Coconut water is a fresh and tasty source of emergency water when one is stranded on an island. However, the strained coconut milk should be drank in very small quantities as it is a natural laxative. Coconut milk is fairly commonly used in cooking, especially in desserts. Coconut Cream is the whipped form of coconut milk (it whips fairly easily). Sometimes, when purchasing coconut cream by the can, the contents will come in a cream form.

Why are some palm trees not coconut trees?

Probably because they're not coconut palms. There are many species of trees (over 1500) generically called "palm trees," but only the coconut palm produces coconuts. The scientific name of the coconut palm is Cocos nucifera, which is essentially the Latin equivalent of "coconut bearer."

Even if they are actually coconut palms, they might not bear coconuts in Arizona. Coconut palms require very warm temperatures year-round, and considerable moisture; Arizona is a bit too far north, and mostly too dry, for them to grow well.

How does coconut get water?

Why do you think coconut trees live near a beach, a sea, or a ocean? When the dirt is wet the roots absorb the water. Then the water goes through the roots and the tree cleans the water from the salt, which causes the water to enter the coconut.

But still you are thinking how does the water get in? The stem has a hole. Before you take the coconut off the tree, the coconut has a hole too, so the water goes through the hole and reaches the coconut.

Finally, one more interesting point to note: younger coconuts have a lot of water and only a little of the white pulp and older coconuts have only a little of water and a lot of white pulp.

The whole process may be termed as osmosis or we can also say this is capillarity

What are 3 adaptations of the coconut tree?

Sea water does not kill the round seed inside the air-filled, fibrous husk. Coconut seeds are able to immediately germinate, they require no dormancy or treatment to cold or cracking to sprout. Wherever the coconut rests, the milky water inside the seed provides ample moisture to sustain the seedling as it sprouts, even in seasonally dry beach sands.

the coconut palm has no problem tolerating oppressive humidity and summer heat. The flexible trunk coupled with the flexible, large fronds with slender leaflets make it extremely wind-resistant.

The trunk is sturdy but flexible, supported by many long roots that will keep a coconut palm alive after tipping over or leaning.

The coconut grows in coastal areas. Its fruit has a fibrous layer which helps it to float on water and get dispersed to far off places. The fruit is well protected by the hard covering.

Coconut trees adapt to the rainforest by growing tall to get taller than the canopy. A canopy is a bunch of trees that block rain and sunlight from plants on the floor. The coconut tree grows higher than the canopy so it can get rain and sunlight. That is how coconut trees adapt to the rainforest
