Should foals should have colostrum within the first 12 hours after birth?

Ideally, a foal should get colostrum as soon as possible post foaling. The current school of thought is that the gut closes much more rapidly than originally thought and that 6-8 hours for adequate passive transfer is the limit.

When does the colostrum come in on a horse?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There is no magic time. Some mares may start to drip in the last month or so. But usually once the mare starts to drip or 'wax up' birth will follow with in 24 to 48 hours. If you notice that she is losing too much milk you should contact your vet. She may run out of colostrum before the birth and it is vital that the foal gets colotrum.*

*Interesting fact:There is a window of oppotunity for the foal to get the colostrum. If he does not get the colostrum within 18 hours or so his GI tract will not absorb it which will greatly diminish his chance of survival.

Hello - This is usually caused by several things. Infection, papilloma, tumour etc. You need to see your Doctor straight away about this so some tests can be performed. It is most likely caused by a milk duct infection.

Should you stop milking a cow before a calf is born to increase colostrum?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

YES!! Drying off a cow prior to calving is VERY important. It's not to increase colostrum, but to generate it right after the calf is born. Cows need to rest and gain a bit of weight too, with a couple months taken off from being milked, before they calve and produce milk again.

What is it called when colostrum leaks onto the nipples of the mare?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

This is typically a sign that the mare will foal very soon. There is no real term for the leaking, but if enough of it leaks out the foal might not get enough and need a colostrum supplement. A mare will 'bag up' (her udders become full) about a day or possibly more before foaling also.

Does pregnant cow loose colostrum if sucked prior to giving birth?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No. She will continuously produce colostrum for the calf even after the calf is born. But separate her from the rest of the herd so the calf does have a chance to suckle his momma and not get pushed away by a milk thief. Better yet, see if you can catch the milk thief suckling on that preg cow. If it's another calf, separate that calf with his momma in another pen. If it's another cow, put the cow through a catch chute, put a temporary spiked nose ring in her nose, and let her back with the herd. That nose ring should stop her from suckling milk from another cow.

Your husband had a vasectomy 1 year ago you are leaking colostrum and on your period with a lot of cramping what should you expect or can you still get pregnant?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Hello.

Most vasectomys these days work and stop the man from being fertile, but there is occurances where the man continues to release sperm spontaneously and this causes unexpected pregnancies.

Leaking colostrum is a indication of pregnancy but this usually happens when your 3-4 months pregnant. Most women realise their pregnant this far along but some women don't. Especially if you don't expect to be pregnant. Leaking colostrum is also caused by too much progesterone (female hormone) and this also causes leaking breasts similar to pregnancy. If its caused by progesterone, it isn't pregnancy related hun.

I would see your doctor for a blood test. Good luck and please recommend me if I've helped you. :-)

What causes a mare to not produce colostrum?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Many different things can cause a mare to not produce colostrum. The most common reasons are illness, hormonal imbalance, and fescue toxicity. Fescue toxicity is the most common and the most preventable reason for lack of colostrum in the mare. Removing a pregnant mare from infected fescue grass is vital to preventing this problem.

Fescue grass also causes problems in joints, and possibly even an abort for a mare. I would make sure that she has plenty of clean water (no mud, algae, etc. in it) and get a few bales of premium hay for the lady. If you suspect fescue toxicity, do not waste time but I would call a vet to check her over well also.

For the most part, horse colostrum is not commercially available. I would suggest checking with your equine veterinarian to see if there is a colostrum bank that you could purchase some from.

Is colostrum the top killer of calves?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Most definitely not!! The top killer of all calves is the negligence of people who get an orphaned calf or care for calves that are too slow to get up to suckle is to notprovide colostrum to those calves immediately after birth!! Colostrum is crucial to a calf's survival because a calf has NO immunity of its after birth, only that which it can obtain from its dam's first milk (which is the definition of colostrum!) which contains high amounts of immunoglobins and antibodies which a newborn calf needs within the first 12 hours of life.

What does horse colostrum look like I have a 9 month pregnant pony and when i tried to see if there was milk a really thin yellowy liquid came out Is it colostrum Isn't it supposed to be thick?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Nine months is too early for colostrum. Thin clear yellow or gold fluid is just the beginning of "milk". As the mare approaches foaling the fluid will thicken and turn white to gold in color. Colostrum is thicker than milk but not always a really different color.

The question is...does she have a well formed udder at 9 months? Generally the udder does not begin to really enlarge until a month before

foaling...early udder development can be an indication of uterine infection, a miscalculated conception date, late fetal death of the foal or of a twin or a body pregnancy.

Some pony mares will foal toward the early end of gestation (310 days) so 9 months gestation buts her at about 4-6 weeks from a 310 day delivery.

If you think your conception date is correct you may want to consult with your vet about what you should expect to be seeing with your mare. (Logged out while writing this...had correct my gestational math).
