San Diego is kind of "the original", but there are many others (and SDCC has arguably gotten "too big" and is not really about comics per se anymore). There's one in New York, for example, and there's the Emerald City one in Seattle, and the Small Press Expo in or near Bethesda, MD.

This is so Comic-Con can release unseen footage of the film sometimes as a bonus. The characters sit along a big table and they answer questions from the fans and just talk about the movie.
