What is a laser printer's toner cartridge?
A LaserJet toner cartridge is a cartridge made up of 2 halves. The halves are either designed as a single unit or designed as two individual units that will work as a single unit once installed. Canon and HP have mostly toner cartridges that are two halves that make up one unit or toner cartridge. The two halve are made up of a drum half and a toner half.
The Drum half or waste bin has four main components. The drum which is made of metal has a unique coating on it so that allows it to apply the toner to the paper. It is the only part of the cartridge that makes direct contact with the paper. There is also a PCR or Primary Charge Roller that sits up against the drum. Directly under the drum is the wiper blade, whose job it is to clean all of the old waste toner off the drum as it turns during printing.
The Toner half is made up 3 main components. First there is the Mag or Developer Roller. It is often referred to as the Mag because there is a magnet that is in the developer roller that runs the length of it. Not all cartridges have a magnet in the developer roller but the majority do. Directly under the Mag is the Doctor Blade and it is it's job to make sure the Mag gets a even coat of Toner. The Toner is the last component, its specific elements vary for between cartridges but without it, we'd all be using inkjets or working on our handwriting. No matter what style of cartridge, almost all have these two halve in some form.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of photo printers?
Wow, line printers... Many now in museums.
Advantages? They're very fast and also impact printers. If your needs require multi-part forms, then you must use an impact printer, either dasiy wheel or dot matrix.
Typical main-frame line printers (IBM) use a metal "band saw" character loop, and solenoids for each character position, typically 132 columns. The band spins at several RPS and as each letter aligns with the column it's intended to be, the solenoid, or hammer behind that column fires striking the letter through the ink ribbon, onto the paper.
The speed is obvious. Since each letter passes each column several times per second, the entire line of print can be struck at once. 10 lines per second is typical and the sound is quite high; necessitating heavy sound insulation.
Disadvantages:
The standard "line printer" can only use pin feed paper, cannot use other than standard widths {17"} typical, and is pretty specialized to the system being used. No color other than black.
Summarizing:
They're very fast, faster than most other technology, can print multi-part forms, something only impact printers can do, are large, loud, and something not available in the general retail system. An office desk takes up the same or less space.
Watching one print 10 lines per second, entire lines at once is impressive.
Oh a final disadvantage: price. They're not your $99 home photo printer! About 4 digits last I checked (mid 80's, IBM system 34/36, slower and less RAM, HDD space then a standard desktop! - but multi-user, mutitasking - with green on black monitors)
Which lexmark printer model is the same as the dell 926 all-in-one printer?
Lexmark X6570 <---- Does not work! Update: I bought the X6750 ink cartridge and tried to use it in my Dell 948. The cartridges do look identical, but the X6570 (No. 42 or 44) does NOT work in the Dell 948. Don't waste your money. I suspect Dell has rigged the cartridge in some way so that you must buy their ink exclusively for them to make a profit off the ink. This is very common. They sell the printer for $30 bucks and then charge $30 a pop for the ink which is extremely cheap for them to produce. Pure profit. It's a bait and switch game.

How does a 5 percent coverage print look?
These two paragraphs placed on an A4 or Letter-sized sheet of paper make up 5% coverage:
"For the purpose of cartridge yield measure, almost all printer manufacturers base their black ink/toner cartridge yields on 5% coverage. This means only 5% of the whole page is covered with ink or toner. 5% coverage implies basic type with no bold characters, no graphics and no pictures.
CMYK toners for color laser printers and copiers base their cartridges yields on 20% to 35% coverage (5% to 7% per color). In reality, if a document had a 100% fill, there would be 400% coverage. Tri-color inkjet/toner cartridges base their page yield on 15% coverage (5% per color)."

If you have two different printers attached to a computer you need what?
I can answer your question for Microsoft Windows operating system.
I am not a Macintosh user, so I can only offer intelligent guesses for a Mac, but I suspect you are using a Windows machine.
Also, I have extremely limited experience with Windows Vista operating system (and strongly advise against using Vista), so again, I can only offer intelligent guesses.
When you go to print a document from Windows you use the following Menu selections:
FILE
At which point a Pop-up window appears, labeled "Print" at the top.
The first region of the window is labeled "Printer", and it has a line labeled "Name". This refers to the name of the printer, and has a drop-down menu associated with it. Click on the down arrow at the far right of the drop-down menu and you will see a list of all the printers that are installed for use by your PC. Here is where you chose which printer your document will be sent to.
There is a "Properties" button to the right of the drop-down menu. You can use this to set various properties of the printer, such as telling a color printer to print in only black-and-white, or to use Landscape or Portrait mode for the orientation on the paper; and lots of other stuff that you shouldn't play with yet until you've had more experience. (Or asked more questions--next time say what operating system you are using and my answers can be more focused.)
For a Mac, there is probably a similar way to select the printer name once you have issued a PRINT command.
An additional note: If your PC is connected to a telephone modem, you can send FAXes with the PRINT command. You can install FAX software, and use FAX as one of your Printer options. (You can also receive FAXes, but that is a different discussion for a different day.)
If you have installed the FAX software, Click the START button in the lower left corner of the screen, and from this menu select "Help and Support". When you get the Help and Support window, find the SEARCH area near the top of the screen and search for "FAX". I am using Windows XP, and the result of my search gives me seven topics, including "Using Fax" which provides the information for installing the FAX capability.
Good Luck,
- Dr. Q

How can you connect two computers to one printer?
Connect the primary, or first, computer to the printer. This is done traditionally with a printer cable linking the primary computer to the printer. If this is the first time the computer is hooked up to the printer, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation and setup.
Change the settings on the primary computer to allow sharing of the printer. Go through the control panel menu option, and select printers. Right-click on the printer selection and choose "Share printer." You are now able to share the printer with any other computers on your network.
Connect the secondary computer to the printer. Access the shared printer option from the secondary computer. Select "network neighborhood" and locate the primary computer. Double-click on the primary computer, and the shared resources will become available. Double-click on the printer. You can now utilize the printer from both computers.
or
Print sharing has become popular in many home networks primarily because it reduces the cost in implementing networking environments as well as maximizing the potential uses of network resources. The process of hooking two computers to a single printer is very much different from connecting two printers to a single computer because unlike computer systems, printing devices normally only have one communication port that can host a connection. To achieve the task of connecting two computers to a single printer, other devices would have to come into the picture to serve as the host for the printer and provide the underlying communication layer for all devices trying to make use of its printing functionality. The Operating System running on both machines that want to make use of the printing device must also support networking and printer sharing features in order to make this task feasible.
Materials Needed:
- Router
- Ethernet cable
- USB switch
- crossover cable
- network card
- print server
- Operating System that supports printer sharing
Step 1
One of the easiest options to share a printer on networked machines is to connect and install it in one of the machines. Simply click on the 'Start' button and choose the 'Control Panel' category.
Step 2
Select the 'Printer and Faxes' option and click on the 'Add a Printer' task. This will bring up the printer installation page. Make sure to install the printer hardware as a local printer. Follow the prompts to complete the installation process.
Step 3
When completely installed, click on the 'Start' button and select the 'Printer and Faxes' category. The icon for the newly installed printer should be there already. Right click on the icon and select sharing.
Step 4
Provide a shared name for the printing device and click on the 'OK' button.
Step 5
On the other computer, repeat Step 1 to Step 2 but this time, choose the network printer option. Type in the name of the printer and follow the prompts. Install the device driver when prompted to do so.
Step 6
A variation of this method which eliminates the use of a router device is to connect the two machines using a crossover cable. Simply insert one end into the NIC of the machine and repeat the process for the other computer.
Step 7
Both machines must be running at least Microsoft Windows XP to allow for the automatic detection of the network connection. This procedure basically functions the same way as a network environment but is limited to two machines and does not require a router.
Step 8
An alternative to this setup is to install a Print Server which will host the printer hardware and connect directly to the network router. In this method, simply connect the printer to the printer server.
Step 9
Proceed by connecting the print server to the network router which will allow the printer hardware to be detected in the network environment as a standalone device. To print using this method, simply use the IP address assigned to the printing device.
Step 10
Another possible solution is to use switching devices. These types of hardware became popular when printers were hosted using parallel and serial cable connections. For USB-based machines, a USB Switch box may be used. Connect the printer directly to the box using the USB cable.
Step 11
Connect the USB cable from each computer to the respective USB ports on the switching device. To use the printer for computer A, simply set the switch to A and do the same for B. In this method, no additional installation is required. All data switching and handling activities are done by the hardware switch.
What should you do if a inkjet printer prints with missing dots or lines on a page?
First, reboot your computer and printer. Then, print a test page in Notepad (programs>accessories>Notepad)--type some information on it first. If it prints okay,
then it has to do with your software or fonts being corrupted. Run the repair program on the CD for your system and see if that helps.
Next check the ink cartridge. Your printer may have a "cleaning routine", if so run it. Or just replace the cartridge.
