Coney Island

Coney Island was originally an island in the Atlantic ocean, but was connected to Brooklyn (NYC) by a landfill. The island is mainly residential, but is a common tourist destination due to its coastline, resorts, and amusement parks.

106 Questions

Can you grill on coney island beach?

Leave the grill at home because grilling is not permitted on Coney Island Beach. No worries, though; you'll have a plethora of food options to dig into on the world-famous boardwalk, including Totonno's Pizza and Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs. Coney also offers an array of fun things to do including roller coasters, people watching, games, and other rides and amusements, so eats may be the last thing on your mind.

Manhattan Beach is the only Brooklyn beach that allows grilling near the beach. There are signed designated areas where barbecuing is permitted. Grilling is legal only in the section northeast of the promenade, next to the parking lot, and also adjacent to Hastings Street.

What year did coney island park in Ohio open?

How much is a subway ride from Penn Station to Coney Island?

You can't take the subway from Newark Airport to Penn Station. Newark Airport is in Newark, New Jersey, and the New York City subway system does not go to New Jersey.

The PATH train runs from New Jersey to Manhattan, and connects to the A-C-E line (the blue line) of the NYC subway system. But the PATH train does not stop at or near Newark, either.

You can always get a yellow cab at the airport, although you might have to wait awhile for one. If you don't want to wait, you can call a car service in advance to pick you up. There are two main companies that service the New York City area: Carmel (212-666-6666) and Dial 7 Car & Limo (212-777-7777). Both provide excellent service; it really doesn't matter which one you pick.

You can also take a bus from Newark to Penn Station. See the Related Link below.

Newark Airport has a shuttle connecting all terminals and stoping at a train connection to Penn Station, Newark. The Path system does have a station there about every 20 minutes a Path tain leaves for Hobokin, World Trade Center site, or several stops ending at Penn Station, NY. actually under it, at 33 Street, NY. I do not remember the prices but if you check Newark Airport's web site and PATH's web site you should be able to find them.

Which train do you take from Penn Station to Coney Island?

The D and F trains (of the B-D-F-M, the orange line) and the N and Q trains (of the N-R-Q-W, the yellow line) stop at Coney Island.

You can take the Downtown D or F trains from 34th Street and 6th Avenue (Herald Square), or the Downtown N or Q trains from 34th Street and Broadway (also Herald Square). In fact, these two stations are connected to each other.

If by "33rd Street" you were referring to Penn Station, then: take the Uptown 1-2-3 or the Uptown A-C-E,*one stop, from 34th Street-Penn Station to 42nd Street-Times Square.

Transfer at the Times Square Station to the Downtown N or Q trains.

*Note that the 42nd Street stop on the A-C-E is actually not Times Square. Since the A-C-E runs up and down 8th Avenue, while the Times Square Station is at 7th Avenue, the 42nd Street stop on the A-C-E is actually 42nd Street-Port Authority Bus Terminal. BUT, there is an underground tunnel connecting the A-C-E to the Times Square Station, so you can transfer without exiting the subway system.

So, it is preferable to take the Uptown 1-2-3 from Penn Station to Times Square, rather than the Uptown A-C-E, to save yourself the walk through the tunnel. But if you can't find the 1-2-3, or if the A-C-E happens to be right there when you get off your train at Penn Station, you can take it.

Coney Island at the southern tip of the New York City borough of Brooklyn. It is actually not an island, although it once was. Now it is a peninsula.

Brooklyn is one of the five boroughs of New York City: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island.

See the Related Link below for maps. The first is a map from space of the lower part of Brooklyn. Coney Island is the western half of the part sticking out at the bottom (the middle half is occupied by Brighton Beach, which is the city's most prominent Russian neighborhood, and the eastern half is occupied by Manhattan Beach).

The second picture shows all of Brooklyn, and the third is a New York City subway map showing all the five boroughs.

Does Coney Island still have their freakshow?

Yes, they do. The last time I went to it was 5 years ago (summer of 2005), but according to Coney Island's official website, the Coney Island Circus Sideshow is still running this year, 2010.

Be warned, though: it's not a particularly exciting freak show. It's definitely nothing like the freak shows in the old days. They only have a couple of performers, and none of them are "real" freaks (you know, like, the bearded lady, Siamese twins, the mermaid lady). None of them are deformed.

Instead, they do tricks. There's one guy who swallows fire and escapes from a straightjacket in 2 minutes. There's a guy who lays on a bed of nails while people jump up and down on him, or put heavy blocks of concrete on him. Then there's a tattooed lady, and this really weird old guy from Brooklyn who acts as an MC (Master of Ceremonies).

It only costs $5, so, it's not like you get ripped off. But it's not like, something you just CAN'T miss.

When I was there, the freak show was located just inside the main entrance to the park, on the right side. But according to the second Related Link (see below) the freak show has moved this year.

How far is Coney Island from Manhattan?

Coney Island is 10 to 11 miles from the East Side of Lower Manhattan (the City Hall area). It's about 10.5 miles from City Hall. The City Hall area is about a mile from the tip of Lower Manhattan, and Manhattan is 13.4 miles long and 2.3 miles wide at its widest point.

So it would be up to 25 miles from the Inwood neighborhood (at the northern tip of Manhattan), and somewhere between 10 and 25 miles from any point in between City Hall and Inwood.

Does Coney Island have new rides for 2011?

Yes, there are quite a few new rides opening for the 2011 season at Coney Island's Luna Park. There are a few new roller coasters (the first new ones Coney Island has had since the Cyclone opened in 1927) and there is a whole new area of the park called the Scream Zone.

See the Related Link below for the Luna Park website. There are two links from the home page to the Scream Zone section: either click the text link near the top, right side, next to the links to "Job Opportunities," "Webcam," and "Contact Us." There're also six large icons you can click on in the middle of the page. Click the top left one ("ARE YOU READY TO SCREAM? DISCOVER THE BRAND NEW THRILL PARK, SCREAM ZONE AT CONEY ISLAND").

They also have photos, descriptions and height requirements for all of their rides. Scroll to the bottom, left side, under the Park Map section. You'll see the heading, "Attractions," and three links below it: High Thrill, Moderate Thrill and Mild Thrill.

What is the crowd like at Coney Island?

The same as the rest of New York: a melting pot. Mostly whites, blacks, and Latinos, but also Asians and Middle Easterners. There are a lot of Russians, too, since Brighton Beach (the biggest Russian neighborhood in the city) is just a mile down the boardwalk from Coney Island.

Coney Island attracts a more working-class crowd, since New Yorkers who can afford it go to the beaches on Long Island, Fire Island, the Hamptons, and Cape Cod. All it costs to go to the beach at Coney Island is a subway ride. And it's not just a beach; there's an amusement park with rides and games as well.

One of the best things about Coney Island is the food. They have regular boardwalk and amusement park food: corn on the cob, fried shrimp, fried clams, hot dogs, cotton candy, etc. But the very best thing is these Mexican taco carts. I've never seen these taco carts anywhere but Coney Island, and they have the best tacos ever, with all homemade ingredients.

Basically, it's a happy, well-fed crowd. Occasionally you meet some sketchy, creepy people, but for the most part it's pretty safe.
