Cowboy Boots

Cowboy boots are a specific type of riding boot. They are tall and usually made of leather. They come in two styles. There are ropers, which lace up. Then there is the better known western style slip on. They are both made with a rounded taper to allow for ease of use with stirrups, and heels that allow for the attachment of spurs.

How do you walk in cowboy boots?

All you have to do is soak them in the trough or perhaps your bathtun before you go out in the morning. You can be wearing them while they soak or not. It should not take more than just a couple minutes of soaking. Don't actually get water inside them, that will probably ruin the inside and make them uncomfortable (depending upon the boots). While they are submerged past the ankle part at least, if you are not wearing them, push outward from the inside on the places that might rub you the worst. For me it was right at the ankles. Bend them around a bit into the shape you want them. Once you have let each boot soak for just a couple of minutes put them on (unless they are already on, then just keep them on). Roll your foot around in them a while to try and streach them and mold them to your feet. Wear them around for a few hours at least. After that, you can either take them off or continue to wear them while you work.

Note: You may need to do this more than once. Just soak em a little each morning befoer you head out in them and put them on while they are still wet. If your boots are not water proof (not every western boot is water proof), you are going to have to do one of two things: deal with the water (wear thick socks), or deal with the pain of wearing boots that are not molded to your feet. You should be able to take em off and let em dry after a couple of hours anyway.

or you can walk them puddles of water

first of all you should not buy any boot that is not ALL-LEATHER. Meaning every part is leather, including insoles and shanks. Once you have bought a good boot, soak them in a tub of warm water for 30 minutes make sure the entire foot of the boot is soaked then strap on a thick pair of socks and wear them for a solid 10-12 hours. Or pour a cup of water down inside your boots strap them on and wear them until dry, and they will be perfect.

What brand name cowboy boot did John Wayne wear?

I was told that he wore Lucchese boots, exclusively. I was told this at a boot store in south Washington State and tried on a pair as a result. These are the best looking and most comfortabley pair of boots I've ever worn and I will never own any other brand. I was told that John Wayne said essentially the same thing. I can't verify that Lucchese are the "Duke's" brand, but I could certainly see why he would choose them.

ADDED NOTE by Joe Erwin (agingapes@gmail.com) It is claimed that John Wayne (also) wore Olsen-Stelzer boots, and I have a pair in size 10.5 or 11 that have "Marion Morrison," John Wayne's real name, stamped inside the shafts. I have not yet been able to authenticate that they were actually his, but it is plausible, as they are the correct size for him (even though some claims are made that he had small feet). These boots are very comfortable--every bit as much as any of my Lucchese boots (I have three pairs and all are really comfortable). Even so, my personal favorite boots are Stewart, made in Tucson. Given that "Duke" was in Tucson a lot (to make movies), I would be surprised if he did not have some Stewarts. They really are excellent boots.
